Overview

Certified Nursing Assistant (Healthcare)

The primary purpose of this position is to provide assigned residents with routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with the resident's assessment and care plan, and as directed by supervisors.

Responsibilities
  • Identify residents using wristbands or photo cards before administering treatments, serving meals, or as necessary.
  • Record information using only authorized abbreviations established by the facility.
  • Report changes in the resident's condition to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse promptly.
  • Record entries on flow sheets, notes, charts, etc., in an informative and descriptive manner.
  • Report accidents and incidents observed during the shift.
  • Protect resident health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of disclosure policies to the Administrator.
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access the facility's information system.
  • Perform only nursing care procedures for which you have been trained.
  • Prepare residents' rooms for receiving residents (bed made, name tags up, admission kit available).
  • Greet residents and escort them to their rooms; introduce residents to roommates, other residents, and personnel as appropriate.
  • Make residents comfortable and assist with packing/unpacking personal possessions during transfers or discharge.
  • Transport residents to new rooms or to the receiving area; assist with loading/unloading to/from vehicles as necessary.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and calm throughout the unit and shift.
  • Meet with shift nursing personnel regularly to address problem areas and improve services.
  • Report complaints and grievances made by residents and participate in nursing reports as instructed.
  • Follow policies regarding exposure to blood and body fluids and when making beds or adding covers as requested.
  • Measure and record temperatures, pulses, and respirations (TPRs) as instructed; weigh and measure residents as instructed.
  • Check residents who are unable to call for help; respond to resident calls promptly and routinely check personal care needs.
  • Assist residents with identifying and understanding food arrangements; record and report changes in eating habits to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
  • Keep water pitchers clean and filled; ensure water is within easy reach; perform after-meal care (remove trays, clean hands/face/clothing).
  • Participate in nursing reports at the start of duty; perform tasks per established policies and supervisor instructions.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental and facility personnel to maintain nursing services to meet residents' needs.
  • Notify the facility if you will be late or absent; report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals per policy.
  • Assist residents with daily functions (dental care, bathing, grooming, dressing, etc.); keep residents dry and comfortable.
  • Assist with preparing residents for medical tests and with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transporting as needed.
  • Perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures as instructed; prepare residents for physical examinations.
  • Observe and report on skin integrity and accidental injuries; monitor disoriented or comatose residents and report data as instructed.
  • Perform special treatments as instructed; notify Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse about residents who leave or go missing.
  • Use only equipment you have been trained to use and report defective equipment to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information, and report any unauthorized disclosure or resident abuse/misappropriation of property.
  • Honor resident refusals of treatment and report such requests to your supervisor.
Supervisory Requirements

This position has no supervisor responsibilities

Qualification

Education and/or Experience

Must possess, as a minimum, a 10th grade education.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must be a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant in accordance with state laws. CPR preferred.
