Job Summary /Basic Function
The Department of Visual Art and Design at Weber State University seeks a part-time shop technician to help maintain a safe, clean, and efficient fabrication shop environment for the Sculpture area. Job responsibilities include providing supervision, maintenance, and equipment oversight of the DOVAD Sculpture lab. The primary role will be to provide assistance and technical support for faculty and students in woodworking and metal shops.
The successful candidate will have an eye for detail, organization, and cleanliness, as well as basic knowledge of woodworking equipment, processes, and techniques. The ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, and productive work environment is essential. Emphasis will be placed on the candidate’s ability to supervise safety procedures for students when operating tools and machinery.
- Provide routine management and maintenance for the sculpture lab facilities.
- Manage and conduct open shop hours for the art department and instruct students on safety procedures in shops.
- Assist in the oversight of general safety that meets OSHA standards.
- Maintain, organize, and clean the wood and metal shops and classrooms.
- Applicant needs to be a BFA student with an emphasis in Sculpture, or a related art degree and basic understanding of sculpture methods and processes including woodworking and metals.
- Ability to supervise woodworking shops and metal shops and provide instruction to students on safety policies and proper use of tools and machines.
- A working knowledge of sculpture methods and a desire to learn new sculpture methods and technology.
- Basic knowledge of CNC router, plasma, and laser cutter operation.
- Instructional experience at the college level, or other related teaching experience.
- Strong communication and organizational skills for providing technical assistance to students and helping to organize tool rooms.
- Ability to interact with students in a professional academic setting and follow university policies regarding diversity, equity and inclusion within the classroom dynamic.
