Position: Student Services - Youth-In-Care (YIC) Mentor (28186)

A position has been declared open in the Weber School District in the Student Services Department for a Youth‑In‑Care (YIC) Mentor. This is an itinerant position working in schools across the district. This position is 4.00 hours per day, 180 days (9 months) per year, and is compensated according to Lane 4(B) of the Paraprofessionals Salary Schedule.

This position is funded through a grant and will be funded on a year‑by‑year basis with no guarantee of ongoing employment.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Youth‑In‑Care Mentor role was established to build a strong relationship with students based on mutual trust and open communication focused on academic and personal success. Mentors provide individualized academic and behavioral support to a defined caseload of students, specifically those in foster care or juvenile justice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review grades, behaviors, and attendance with students based on SMART goals determined individually.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, counselors, student advocates, SRO, administration, and case workers to build a supportive system for students and families.
  • Act as liaison, building relationships between schools, case workers, foster homes, and other involved agencies to promote communication and problem‑solving.
  • Support a positive school climate through interaction with students, families, staff, and community members.
  • Facilitate social and emotional growth with students.
  • Maintain progress charts and evaluate student progress, including attendance, behavior, and academic data.
  • Systematically “Checks” on students, assessing engagement with school and learning via close monitoring of attendance, behaviors, and grades.
  • “Connects” with students, offering individualized interventions in partnership with school personnel, families, foster parents, and community service providers.
  • Assist assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of students; monitor student performance variables such as absences, tardies, behavior referrals, and grades.
  • Supervise students during instructional and non‑instructional time.
  • Analyze data from systematic monitoring to design personalized interventions and document progress.
  • Provide timely interventions to help students solve problems, build skills, and enhance competence.
  • Help students both individually and in small groups, and organize/manage assigned tasks with students.
  • Attend extracurricular activities such as games, choir and band concerts, theatre, art shows, and sports when deemed necessary.
  • Maintain instructional materials, daily activity/incident logs, and/or electronic records.
  • Coordinate with community partners to build resources.
  • Improve professional competence through professional development, district and state trainings.
  • Attend varied school and district meetings to define roles and improve participation, performance, and success for individual students and families.
  • Ensure regular work attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities and be attentive to detail with data.
  • Remain calm in a crisis situation.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
