Project Overview

Craig Technologies is supporting Bechtel, the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program. The program modernizes the ground‑based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure. Bechtel’s scope in Sentinel’s current Engineering & Manufacturing Development phase focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program.

A major contractor for the United States and allied governments, Bechtel has handled projects in chemical weapons demilitarization, missile‑defense, infrastructure, base operations, procurement, project management, and restoration and recovery spanning half a century. We use our expertise to help our customers securely and effectively transform mission delivery.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Lead will support the Mechanical Engineering Group Supervisor in leading other Mechanical Engineers who prepare design and procurement documents for the Sentinel Project. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments as they pertain to HVAC systems and unique requirement‑driven equipment. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem‑solving capabilities, and excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).

They will serve as the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values to external partners, including vendors, construction companies, and subcontractors.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide direction and technical guidance to the discipline work group and assist the management of discipline work‑process execution, ensuring technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.
  • Assist in building an inclusive team environment where all members can contribute to their maximum capability; provide leadership and mentoring to team members.
  • Establish or assist in establishing and maintaining work plans to ensure schedules are met and stakeholder requirements satisfied; create and track actions, estimate hours, and update schedules.
  • Devise innovative approaches to solving problems from detailed technical options and assess cost implications.
  • Contribute directly to the cost‑effective design of plumbing and fire protection systems as well as unique requirement‑driven equipment.
  • Identify major technical uncertainties and present solution options for management decisions.
  • Serve as an advisor for the analysis and solution of engineering problems, interpret drawings, verbal instructions, and applicable codes relevant to project requirements, and articulate explanations.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the client in developing the design.
  • Perform other related work as assigned by the Mechanical Supervisor or Deputy Supervisors.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to complete and pass a pre‑employment drug and background check, including verification of employment and education.
  • Experience in Piping/Ventilation and Instrument Diagram (P&/V&) development, HVAC system design, equipment, pipe, and duct sizing calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, DoD projects, or chemical process facilities.
  • Experience with International Mechanical Code, ASHRAE, and/or SMACNA codes typically used in HVAC systems.
  • Experience working on DOD government projects and with the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFCs).
  • Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME NQA-1 or AS9100D.
  • U.S. Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering (or ability to obtain within 12 months).
