A Registered Nurse in the Neurology Unit at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, IN, is responsible for providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions such as stroke, seizures, and traumatic brain injuries. The role involves performing thorough assessments, monitoring neurological status, administering medications and treatments, and responding to changes in patient condition. Nurses collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team to create individualized care plans, educate patients and families, and support recovery and rehabilitation.

Additional responsibilities include accurate documentation using electronic health records, adhering to hospital policies and safety protocols, and participating in quality improvement initiatives to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care to adult and geriatric neurology patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, seizures, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injuries)
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing monitoring of neurological status
  • Administer medications and neurological treatments per physician orders and hospital protocols
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team including neurologists, therapists, case managers, and other nurses, to develop and implement individualized care plans
  • Educate patients and families about neurological conditions, treatment plans, discharge instructions, and ongoing care needs
  • Monitor for and respond to changes in patient condition, recognizing and acting on neurological emergencies
  • Utilize electronic health records (EHR) for accurate and timely documentation of care and patient progress
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and infection control practices
  • Support patients through rehabilitative and recovery processes, including assistance with mobility, nutrition, and hygiene as needed
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and unit-based staff meetings
  • Serve as a patient advocate to ensure optimal care and patient satisfaction
Qualifications:
  • Active RN license in the state of Indiana (or eligible for licensure)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program (BSN preferred)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) preferred or required within a set timeframe
  • Previous experience in neurology, med-surg, or critical care preferred but not required; new grads may be considered with strong clinical performance
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills, particularly in recognizing and responding to neurological changes
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize care in a fast-paced hospital setting
  • Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care and continuous professional development
