Assistant Professor of Music - Black American Music

Join to apply for the Assistant Professor of Music - Black American Music role at Tulane University School of Medicine.

The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University is seeking an assistant professor of music (tenure‑track) with expertise in the history and practice of Black American music. We wish to hire a candidate with commitment to contributing to the body of research on music associated with Black American culture, including, but not limited to, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R ’n’ B, Soul, Funk and/or Hip‑Hop, as well as the music of the broader African diaspora.

The position has a start date of July 1 2026.

We expect that competitive candidates will have experience and demonstrated success in classroom teaching at the college or university level, as well as promising research and/or creative output in their field. We are especially interested in recruiting a colleague who can contribute to this area of excellence within the university while fostering strong connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.

Mentorship and advising of undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students are fundamental to this position. In addition to the expectation of strong research/creative output, the position has a 2/2 teaching load of courses for music majors as well as general population students (non‑musicians). These may include “Jazz History,” “New Orleans Music,” and other courses in Black American music history, theory and/or performance, depending on the candidate’s experience and expertise.

The School of Liberal Arts also houses the Department of Africana Studies; several of the music faculty are core affiliates in that department.

This is a tenure‑track position. Tulane is an R1 research institution and successful tenure is dependent on nationally recognized scholarship and/or nationally recognized creative output/performance informed by research. The successful candidate will be a scholar or a scholar‑artist with an active research/creative production/performance portfolio.

The Newcomb Department of Music has a storied history, featuring faculty with expertise in performance, theory, and musicology in American, European, and global traditions. Located in New Orleans, a global cultural capital, our students and colleagues have the opportunity to engage with world‑class performers. Our curricular track in the creative industries helps connect students to the next generation of careers in the arts.
