We have an opportunity for an Automation & Controls Engineer to join our Chardon, OH team. You will drive hands-on projects involving PLCs, robotics, and industrial control systems—delivering real gains in efficiency, safety, and quality. This is a high-impact, visible role with end-to-end project ownership and strong cross-functional collaboration. You will also grow your skills, influence long-term automation strategy, and build a career path in engineering leadership or advanced manufacturing innovation.
** You will:
*** Lead automation initiatives by designing, developing, and integrating computer-controlled electronic and mechanical systems for manufacturing, processing, and production equipment.
* Support new product and process development by applying advanced control systems and electro-mechanical design concepts. Assist with assembly, testing, validation, and documentation of new equipment and products.
* Own and manage automation projects from concept through execution, including developing project plans with resources, timelines, and budgets. Ensure projects align with the site’s long-term automation and technology roadmap.
* Design, program, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and robotic systems (e.g., Fanuc) to improve equipment performance and reliability.
* Analyze and optimize production workflows for efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness using lean tools and data-driven decision-making.
* Collaborate cross-functionally with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to integrate automation systems into existing operations.
* Drive continuous improvement through kaizen events, lean work cell design, and cost-reduction initiatives.
* Support standardization and documentation by developing and maintaining manufacturing documentation such as SOPs, routers, and work instructions.
* Ensure safety and compliance by conducting risk assessments and applying relevant industry standards and protocols.
** Key
Qualifications:
*** Have earned a bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in electrical, mechanical, industrial engineering, or related technical field.
* Have 3+ years of hands-on experience working with automation systems in manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics environments—such as PLC programming, HMI design, or robotic system integration.
* Proficiency with industrial control platforms such as Allen-Bradley (Rockwell), Siemens, or Fanuc; experience with troubleshooting and optimizing control systems and automated equipment.
* Familiarity with robotic systems used in production or warehouse automation, including pick-and-place, material handling, or AGVs (automated guided vehicles).
* Experience applying Lean Manufacturing or continuous improvement principles (e.g., kaizen, 5S, standard work).
* Strong project management and problem-solving skills, with the ability to lead initiatives and collaborate across departments.
* Effective communication and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
* Working knowledge of automation safety standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA 79, ISO 13849).
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-mix environment with both legacy and modern systems.
