Senior, Controls Design Engineer – ATS Industrial Automation
As a Controls Design Engineer you will be the driving force behind bringing ATS’ machines to life. You will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic, multi‑disciplinary team working to design and commission world‑class automation solutions. You will develop machine concepts, design control software, integrate software into electrical and mechanical systems, develop processes, and ultimately install sites worldwide. You will program state‑of‑the‑art equipment – PLCs, PCs, robotics, motion controllers, vision, dispense, laser and other technologies, especially with a focus on vision systems.
The position includes international travel to support global deployments.
- Design and develop software programs (PLC and/or PC based) for customer and project requirements.
- Debug and commission control systems at the facility and on‑site at customer locations.
- Select, test, and integrate hardware and software components such as robots, analog devices, motion controllers, sensors, vision systems, dispense systems, and lasers.
- Collaborate with control‑systems and other teams to improve integration methods, enhancing safety, functionality, and cost.
- Ensure labor and material budgets and delivery schedules are met or improved.
- Work with customers, project managers, designers, toolmakers, and electricians to solve problems and deliver complete automation systems.
- Provide thorough testing of machine functionality to verify software program completeness.
- Document projects accurately.
- Advise customers on technical problem solving.
- Follow and contribute to quality programs (e.g., ISO/NQA) procedures.
- Provide customer training on machine operation, programming principles, and program structure.
- Adhere to ATS Code of Business Conduct and health‑and‑safety rules, including LOTO procedures and PPE.
- Travel to customer and supplier sites for installation, commissioning, and training.
- Frequent and extended travel, domestically and internationally; prepared to spend significant time on short notice.
- 6+ years of engineering design, development, programming, and commissioning experience in automated systems, custom machinery, or industrial equipment.
- Strong programming, mechanical, and electrical problem‑solving skills.
- Hands‑on experience with PLCs, robotics control systems, and machine operation.
- Hands‑on experience with robotics and control systems highly desirable.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to work independently and as part of a team in fast‑paced environments.
- Work in accordance with divisional health, safety, and environmental procedures and compliance with legislative requirements.
- Do not remove or alter safety devices unless lockout‑tagout is applied.
- Report unsafe conditions or equipment defects to supervisor.
- Use required protective equipment for tasks.
- Attend required health, safety, and environmental training.
- Assist in accident/incidence investigations where applicable.
