In partnership with Shield AI on the XBAT program, GE Aerospace is advancing F110 propulsion system integration for next-generation autonomous aircraft, with emphasis on development of an axisymmetric vectoring exhaust nozzle (AVEN) design. This effort includes development of nozzle concepts that balance thrust-vector control authority, weight, thermal capability, structural integrity, and manufacturability. Engineering scope includes aerodynamic design, kinematic and mechanical integration, heat transfer analysis, material selection, and validation planning to support high-performance unmanned aircraft operation.
As an XBAT AVEN Mechanical Design Advanced Lead Engineer at GE Aerospace, you will lead the design, procurement, and development of components for the vectoring exhaust nozzle module for the F110 engine as a hardware and/or sub-module owner. This role is for a passionate engineering problem solver who understands the design process, tackles technical challenges head-on, and excels at teamwork and collaboration.
This position may report to an engineering manager in either Lynn, MA or Evendale, OH with the opportunity to integrate with various internal & external engineering disciplines.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the conceptualization, design, analysis, and validation of complex mechanical systems and components, including but not limited to, static structures, kinematic components, primary and secondary flaps, and associated ancillary hardware.
- Drive the application of advanced engineering principles, simulation tools (e.g., FEA, CFD), and material science to optimize performance, weight, and cost while ensuring compliance with stringent aerospace and power generation standards.
- Work with product definition teams to develop and release component and assembly drawings for assigned exhaust nozzle system hardware, ensuring configuration control, producibility, and compliance with engine and air vehicle integration requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to mechanical, thermal and systems engineers supporting exhaust nozzle system development, fostering strong engineering rigor, cross-functional collaboration, and continuous improvement in design execution.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with systems, manufacturing, supply chain, test, and integration teams to ensure timely development, delivery, assembly, and integration of exhaust nozzle system hardware and supporting equipment.
- Develop and execute design verification and validation plans for exhaust nozzle system components and subsystems, including rig and engine test support, test fixture definition, instrumentation requirements, data analysis, and technical report generation.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks across the product lifecycle using structured design and problem-solving methods.
- Present exhaust nozzle system designs, analyses, test results, and technical recommendations to internal stakeholders, customers, and certification or regulatory representatives as required.
- Ensure all exhaust nozzle system designs adhere to company engineering standards, safety requirements, quality expectations, and applicable airworthiness or program-specific compliance requirements.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field from an accredited university.
- Master's or Ph.D. preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, with a strong focus on advanced systems within aerospace, power generation, or a closely related high-tech industry.
- GE Aerospace will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
- Proven experience leading technical projects and/or mentoring junior engineers.
- Expert-level proficiency with CAD software (e.g., NX, CATIA) and advanced simulation tools (e.g., Ansys).
- Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including stress analysis, fatigue, fracture mechanics, vibrations, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
- Demonstrated experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and additive manufacturing processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic…
