Job Description

The Director of Labor Strategy devises and executes the labor relations (LR) strategy for operations across all sectors in the assigned US [or Canada] area of responsibility. This position supports operational partners in collective bargaining, contract administration, organizing campaigns, and positive employee relations. The Director negotiates contracts, manages day‑to‑day contract administration, provides interpretive guidance to management, processes grievances, supports positive employee relations, investigates matters, facilitates training, builds relationships with union representatives, and performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute labor strategy and progressive labor solutions for operations within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Execute contract preparation and serve as the Company’s chief labor negotiator for select labor contracts as assigned.
  • Build credibility with and maintain positive morale among employees, gain trust of management, and act as a business partner for operational leaders.
  • Provide coaching and counseling support to local management on labor relations matters.
  • Assist and support Business Development in generating marketable labor solutions meeting client and company needs.
  • Execute effective training tools and conduct training for employees and managers in the area of positive employee relations and labor relations.
  • Work closely with the Labor Relations leadership, as well as in‑house and outside counsel to proactively respond to labor issues, management/labor councils, mediations and arbitrations.
  • Assist in the development and execution of business continuation plans.
  • Manage and track grievances utilizing established grievance processes, evaluate trends, identify training and development opportunities, and develop plans for reduction of grievances and expenses.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of labor and employment law practices and current events in the labor relations field.
  • Assist in major investigations and fact‑finding on employee and labor relations issues within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Develop and maintain close working partnerships with business leaders, HR, and other functional partners.
  • Develop and enhance the Company’s relationships with its unions.
  • Understand and influence site activities around employee engagement.
  • Participate in providing feedback to business leaders and HR partners on supervisor and manager development.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects, global ER/LR projects, and other ER/LR/HR committees/projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Labor/Industrial Relations, Human Resources, Business, Political Science, Economics or related fields, required.
  • Master’s Degree, preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant labor relations experience, including first‑chair labor negotiations, contract administration, and union communication campaigns, required.
  • Prior 3PL or Supply Chain experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, including hourly associates.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Travel requirements: approximately 30% of the time.
