Job Summary

The Food Safety & Quality Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of quality control systems to ensure compliance with food safety standards, product specifications, and regulatory requirements. This includes continuous improvement efforts to meet or exceed standards set by the FDA, ODA, Safe Quality Food (SQF), Primus

GFS (GFSI) food audits, and certification bodies for Kosher, Organic, and Gluten-Free products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Quality and Compliance Coordination:
    Collaborate with R&D and Regulatory Compliance teams to secure approval for raw materials and finished products. Ensure adherence to industry standards and regulations.
  • Auditing and Monitoring:
    Conduct regular audits of manufacturing processes, including first-run audits with R&D, to verify compliance with safe food production practices, specifications, and work instructions. Spot-check work orders, shipping, and receiving documents to maintain lot integrity, and ensure mock trace exercises and food defense assessments are conducted.
  • Documentation and Procedures Management:
    Develop, maintain, and regularly update company quality assurance documents, including the Quality Assurance Manual, Food Safety Plan(s), and HACCP plans. Ensure all revisions are controlled, and documents related to QA, manufacturing, and inventory control are properly reviewed and validated.
  • Food Safety Programs Oversight:
    Oversee and improve food safety and quality programs in coordination with cross-functional teams, regulatory compliance, and relevant departments. Manage allergen control and foreign material control procedures and monitor the effectiveness of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS).
  • Training and Development:
    Coordinate training programs for employees on GMP, food safety, sanitation, and quality assurance practices. Manage QA technicians and other staff to ensure proper understanding and implementation of FSQ programs.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Auditing:
    Assist Regulatory Compliance teams in meeting requirements set by agencies such as the FDA, ODA, USDA/Organic, and Kosher certification bodies. Act as the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Practitioner and facilitate the preparation for third-party audits.
  • Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action:
    Work with cross-functional teams to investigate root causes of issues and implement corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement in product quality and safety.
  • Collaboration with External Partners:
    Coordinate with external laboratories for testing and research when required, ensuring timely and accurate results that support quality assurance activities.
  • Communication:
    Effectively communicate updates, policies, and decisions across all levels of the organization, from department managers to executive leadership, ensuring clarity and alignment on food safety and quality standards.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • HACCP Certification required; PCQI and SQF Practitioner preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of FDA/USDA food regulations and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and applicable maintenance systems/software.
  • Ability to work with multi-cultural workforce. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Education and Experience
  • 3-5 years in food manufacturing quality, including leadership experience.
  • Experience with QA tech tools (digital logs, ERP systems, etc).
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
