Reports To Equipment Manager

About S.E.T., Inc.

S.E.T., Inc. is a growing heavy civil contractor specializing in highway, bridge, and infrastructure construction across Ohio and surrounding states. As a $100M+ contractor, we are focused on disciplined growth, operational excellence, and building strong internal systems to support long-term expansion.

We're hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to keep our fleet of construction equipment, trucks, and support equipment running safely and productively.

Position Overview

This position replaces a long-time mechanic who is retiring. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic diagnoses, repairs, and maintains earthmoving equipment, on-road trucks, and small engines and attachments, splitting time between our shop and field service on active jobsites.

This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for a mechanic who can step in and work independently from day one.

Key Responsibilities Equipment You'll Work On
  • — Earthmoving equipment — excavators, dozers, loaders, backhoes, and skid steers
  • — On-road trucks — dump trucks, service trucks, and fleet vehicles
  • — Small engines and support equipment — generators, compressors, pumps, compaction equipment, and attachments
Daily Duties
  • — Diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, drivetrain, undercarriage, and brake systems
  • — Performing scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, and fluid services
  • — Traveling to jobsites to make field repairs and minimize equipment downtime
  • — Using diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot problems quickly and accurately
  • — Welding and fabricating as needed for repairs
  • — Keeping accurate service records, work orders, and parts requests
  • — Coordinating repair priorities and equipment availability with the Equipment Manager and field crews
  • — Keeping the shop, service truck, and tools clean, organized, and ready
  • — Following all safety policies, JSAs, and lockout/tagout procedures
Qualifications Required
  • — 3+ years of hands-on experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic
  • — Ability to diagnose and complete repairs independently with minimal supervision
  • — Strong working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine systems
  • — Experience with diagnostic tools and software
  • — Own set of hand tools
  • — Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation
Preferred
  • — CDL Class A or B
  • — Welding and fabrication skills
  • — DOT annual inspection qualification
  • — Experience with CAT, John Deere, Komatsu, or similar equipment
  • — Experience in heavy civil or highway construction
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • — Climb on and off equipment, kneel, crawl, and work in tight spaces
  • — Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50–75 lbs.
  • — Work in the shop and outdoors on jobsites in all weather and on uneven ground
  • — Overtime and occasional after-hours or weekend repairs may be required to keep projects moving
  • — Pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing per company and DOT policy
What We're Looking For
  • — A self-starter who can take a problem from diagnosis to repair without hand-holding
  • — Someone who takes pride in keeping equipment running and downtime low
  • — A team player who communicates clearly with operators, foremen, and the Equipment Manager
Compensation & Benefits
  • — $24–$38 per hour, based on relevant experience, plus overtime
  • — Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • — Health savings account
  • — Life insurance
  • — SIMPLE IRA with 3% employer match
  • — Paid time off
  • — 11 paid holidays
