Overview

Volunteer Athletic Coach - unpaid supplemental position at Jonathan Alder Local School District.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, and demonstrate behavior that supports character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes.
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
  • Supervise and coordinate a staff of coaches at the high school and middle school level in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.
  • Assist the head coach in regard to submitting participant lists, bus times, parent permissions, physical cards, year-end reports, and program information relative to your sport.
  • Follow policy in the Athletic Handbook and meet all criteria as outlined in the job description.
  • Provide training rules in writing and follow due process procedures.
  • Develop rapport with the athletic coaching staff.
  • Participate in in-service meetings and other activities to improve coaching performance; attend meetings necessary to the welfare of the Athletic Department.
  • Develop sound public relations; cooperate with newspapers, radio, Booster Club, and interested spectators; uphold the integrity of the athletic program by refraining from negative remarks.
  • Maintain suitable sideline conduct at games; expect sportsmanlike behavior to be displayed by assistant coaches and athletes toward all individuals involved with the contest (officials, workers, fans, etc.).
  • Serve as a role model to players, coaches, and spectators in demonstrating good sportsmanship and ethical behavior at all times.
  • Demonstrate respect for opponents before, during, and after the contest; display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  • Work cooperatively with junior high coaches in developing a coordinated program.
  • Work cooperatively with Head Coach and Athletic Director and complete duties assigned to them.
  • Attend all meetings called by the Athletic Director.
  • Coaching performance: develop respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, language, and sportsmanlike conduct during a contest.
  • Be well-versed and knowledgeable in matters pertaining to the sport; maintain discipline and control.
  • Be fair, understanding, tolerant, sympathetic and patient with team members.
  • Educate players on the rules and regulations of the game; expect players to follow them and to accept decisions by officials.
  • Teach sportsmanship and reward players who display good sportsmanship.
  • Teaching ability should be innovative, using new coaching techniques in addition to sound, proven methods.
  • Be prompt in meeting the team for practices and games.
  • Show an interest in athletes in off-season activities and classroom efforts.
  • Delegate authority with responsibility while remaining accountable for such delegations.
  • Team performance should be consistent with the quality of athletes available; supervise players in locker rooms, on the practice field, bus, and other related areas.
  • Related coaching responsibilities: care of equipment, including issuing, collection, inventory, and storage.
  • Cooperate in the preparation of non-league scheduling and assist service clubs, Booster Club, Recreation Department and other organizations related to the athletic program.
  • Follow proper procedures for equipment purchases and operate the sport within the budget as submitted.

Qualifications
  • State of Ohio Teaching License (preferred, not required).
  • Coaching and administrative abilities.
  • Experience in related field.
  • Required to maintain a valid Pupil Activity Permit Validation and all items required to obtain PAP via the Ohio Department of Education. Copies of all certifications must be on file prior to coaching.
