Water Resources Project Engineer
The Project Engineer technically leads a staff that may include a staff engineer and/or CAD Designer while the entire team reports to a Project Manager. The position requires working independently to plan, execute, and oversee engineering tasks to complete a project.
LocationOkemos, MI
Responsibilities- Conduct site investigations to appraise existing conditions relevant to drainage improvements and engineering analysis.
- Prepare engineering analysis, design calculations, and reports for all or a portion of a project for review by a Project Manager.
- Design grading and drainage for site improvements.
- Perform hydrology and hydraulic calculations for gravity and pressure piping systems and above ground conveyance.
- Work with dynamic design teams that may include subconsultants, landscape architects, land use planners, attorneys, owners, and facility managers.
- Prepare project drawings and specifications.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals and fee estimates for potential projects of limited scope and complexity.
- Perform construction related tasks including administering public bids, responding to RFIs, visiting job sites, reviewing submittals, and coordinating with design team for revisions, and assisting with the review of contractor’s requests for payment.
- Develop and present project-specific or technical presentations to clients, technical organizations, and in‑house staff.
- Mentor staff engineers.
- Prepare plan reviews, permit applications, analyze zoning ordinances, and evaluate land use.
- Attend and participate in public meetings related to projects such as the Board of Determination, drainage board, and city council meetings.
- Stay current on legal and industry regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Michigan P.E. License or ability to obtain.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering experience showing progressively increasing responsibility.
- In‑depth experience using AutoCAD for municipal and water resource engineering applications (Civil 3D preferred but not required).
- In‑depth experience using HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, EPA‑SWMM, HY‑8, and ArcGIS/ArcPRO (or QGIS).
- Experience with developing a concept plan for a hydraulic analysis or study.
- Working knowledge of EGLE requirements and experience submitting USACE/EGLE Joint Permit Applications.
- Working knowledge of other computer software programs typically used for civil engineering design and management (Microsoft Office, etc.).
- Self‑motivated and responsible.
- Ability to work collaboratively on a project team.
- Ability to plan one’s own time and demonstrate good time management skills.
- Ability to problem‑solve, complete assigned tasks efficiently and exercise sound engineering judgment.
- Ability to work on several projects concurrently, prioritize workload and cope with tight timelines to meet all deadlines without compromising quality.
- Effective written and verbal communication is necessary. Ability to shape communications for specific audiences, and be able to accept and receive feedback.
- Strong attention to detail with an aptitude for noticing small errors on engineering designs.

Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites or public works facilities.
Hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment. Occasionally required to stand, walk; use hands; reach; sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.
This is a full‑time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and overtime as required.
