Collections Specialist

Description We are looking for a Collections Specialist to support claim recovery activities for a Contract position based in Okemos, Michigan. This role focuses on reviewing railroad claim information, following up on outstanding balances, and maintaining accurate records of collection outcomes. The ideal candidate is organized, persistent, and comfortable communicating with external contacts to resolve unpaid claims efficiently.

Responsibilities:

- Review claim details across railroad web portals to identify open items requiring follow-up.

- Contact railroad representatives consistently to pursue payment on outstanding claims and drive timely resolution.

- Maintain clear records of unpaid claims, documenting railroad responses and next steps for each account.

- Prepare supporting documentation for internal teams when claims are determined to be uncollectible and ready for closure.

- Update claim status reports to reflect amounts recovered, pending items, and collection challenges.

- Monitor collected claims to ensure payments are properly tracked and reported.

- Escalate aging or disputed claims when additional action is needed to support recovery efforts. Requirements - Experience in commercial, consumer, or credit collections.

- Working knowledge of billing collection practices and standard collection processes.

- Ability to manage persistent follow-up with external contacts in a detail-oriented manner.

- Strong attention to detail when tracking claim status, documentation, and payment activity.

- Effective written and verbal communication skills.

- Proficiency with web-based systems and online research for account follow-up.

- Ability to organize workload, prioritize tasks, and meet reporting deadlines.
