General Description:

High School Equivalency teachers will assist adults to acquire and develop literacy and numeracy skills; to acquire the necessary academic prerequisites to access further post‑secondary education and skill training opportunities, or employment and workplace training opportunities; to increase educational levels for purposes of self‑improvement; to learn and develop living and social skills; and/or to acquire and develop English language skills.

This appointment is contingent upon availability of grant or contract funds. If the funds from the grant or contract that provide funding for this appointment are no longer available, this appointment may be terminated without cause upon written notice to the employee.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Job Duties (Position Specific)
    • Teach literacy and how it relates to the adult’s role as a worker, parent and citizen.
    • Provide successful teaching strategies and appropriate accommodations for adults with Learning Disabilities and Special Learning Needs.
    • Use technology in the classroom for instructional purposes.
    • Administer Standardized Official HSE Practice Tests.
    • Serve people in the community who are most in need of literacy services, including those adults who have low incomes or minimal literacy skills.
    • Make learning student-centered and relevant to the individual student’s goals.
    • Be at the classroom site at least 15 minutes before class is to begin.
    • Engage in active teaching strategies which emphasize problem-solving skills and relate learning to the student’s prior experiences and knowledge.
