Overview
Provides failure analysis and forensic consulting services requiring mechanical engineering expertise for insurance, legal, industrial, and other clients. Evaluates injury, equipment, and property damage claims caused by alleged issues with products, heavy equipment, machines, HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and other mechanical systems. Provides oral and written reports of findings, technical guidance to clients, and, when needed, expert testimony.

EssentialJob Functions
- Performs failure analysis for forensic assignments within the field of mechanical engineering based on a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client before performing the work.
- Investigates how and why an incident occurred, identifying the origin, failure mechanism, root cause, and the role of the mechanical system involved.
- Inspects sites/products/equipment/systems; retrieves and analyzes electronic data from equipment; documents conditions and determines cause/origin of damage; conducts site surveys with 3D documentation tools (total station, scanners, drones); performs mechanical engineering calculations; prepares CAD-based and manual sketches; orders and evaluates laboratory testing and conducts analyses.
- Reviews and interprets relevant codes, standards, drawings, specifications, manuals, literature, data logs, and other documentation to evaluate design, installation, operation, and maintenance compliance.
- Conducts analyses including industrial safety and accidents; equipment and machinery design and failure; product liability; and design and safety evaluations.
- Provides support on fire and explosion investigations involving mechanical systems, products, and equipment.
- Initiates and maintains mutually beneficial client relationships.
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering or higher.
- P.E. required.
- 2-10+ years of experience in products, machine design, HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression systems, and/or other mechanical equipment/systems/processes.
- Project Management and/or Field Investigation experience required; strongly preferred.
Skills And Abilities
- High level of analytical skill with attention to detail; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Strong communication with clients at all levels (internal and external).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-aided engineering/design software.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical reports, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Clear writing for scopes of work, budget estimates, schedules, findings reports, proposals, and other technical documents.
- Ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients and to present information to management, clients, and groups.
Physical Demands – Work is conducted in office settings and at accident sites. Requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending, balancing, kneeling, crouching, talking, hearing, and driving to locations. May lift up to 50 pounds. Requires sharpness and alertness during site inspections, reporting, and testimony. Requires clear vision and depth perception.
Overtime – Salaried exempt role. Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday, with occasional overtime as needed.
Travel – Up to 25% travel; some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
