Job Description

Responsible for planning, coordinating, and providing public education and outreach for the Oklahoma Poison Center. Focuses on increasing awareness of poisoning risks, prevention strategies, and the availability of poison center services. Develops educational materials, manages communication platforms, and represents the Oklahoma Poison Center at community and statewide events.

  • Develops and facilitates poison prevention and public health education for community members of all ages, caregivers, schools, civic groups, and the general public.
  • Creates or assists with development of educational materials (print, digital, and audiovisual) tailored to diverse audiences; ensures compliance and documentation of records based on national accreditation standards.
  • Communicates and markets public education programs using appropriate methods, including in-person events, social media, and community partnerships; coordinates schedules and event participation.
  • Provides one poison center phone shift per pay period as a Poison Information Provider (PIP).
  • Assesses community needs and implements appropriate poison prevention strategies; develops evaluation tools to measure program effectiveness.
  • Maintains Oklahoma Poison Center social media accounts and creates innovative campaigns to increase public engagement.
  • Assists with writing poison prevention press releases, manages Oklahoma Poison Center website content, and supports statewide communication efforts.
  • Coordinates and participates in health fairs, safety events, school presentations, and statewide campaigns (e.g., National Poison Prevention Week).
  • Develops and sustains collaborative relationships with schools, public health agencies, EMS/fire, hospitals, and community organizations in support of poison prevention and outreach.
  • Assists with research and publications related to poison prevention, public health, or educational strategies.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides protocol-driven advice and information regarding poison prevention resources, both verbally and in writing.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements
Required

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, AND 12 months professional nursing (RN) experience in an assigned healthcare specialty.
Certifications or Licenses:
  • Oklahoma Registered Nurse licensure.
Skills
  • Knowledge of public education strategies, health literacy principles, and community outreach methods.
  • Ability to design and deliver engaging public education presentations for diverse populations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including professional writing for press releases and social media.
  • Ability to select and use appropriate training and communication methods for public audiences.
  • Ability to build rapport with community partners and inspire public engagement.
  • Strong organizational skills; able to manage multiple events, deadlines, and statewide travel.
  • Ability to excite and motivate diverse audiences.
  • Ability to multitask, handle stressful situations, and work independently.
Department Preferences
  • Public Information Officer (PIO) training or experience with live media interviews.
  • Prior experience with poison centers, emergency preparedness, or public health programming.
  • Active membership or participation in professional organizations such as America’s Poison Centers.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering education to patients, families, caregivers, or the public.
  • Experience in public health, injury prevention, or community-based education programs.
  • Experience managing professional social media accounts, website content, or public-facing communication.
  • Experience in professional writing (press releases, newsletters, reports).
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
