Diagnostic Medical Physicists

General DescriptionDiagnostic medical physicists at OU Health are qualified experts in medical physics as defined by the American College of Radiology, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and other related professional organizations. They provide essential administrative, organizational, structural, and technical expertise that keeps the hospitals and clinics functioning smoothly, safe, and at a state‑of‑the‑art level in a technically complex environment. Their main areas of expertise are nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging, including X‑ray, CT, MRI, mammography, and ultrasound.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Develop, review, or help develop policies and procedures in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
- Develop or assist in quality control procedures and direct the quality control program when needed.
- Perform or oversee procedures beyond the qualifications of a Quality Control Technologist, typically performed by medical physicists or designated assistants.
- Provide recommendations and technical information regarding new equipment selection, layout, and installation.
- Conduct acceptance testing for equipment installations, major repairs, or upgrades of imaging or assay equipment for radiopharmaceuticals.
- Work with maintenance personnel or vendors to ensure appropriate repair, calibration, and preventative maintenance of imaging or assay equipment for radiopharmaceuticals when necessary.
- Troubleshoot problems in imaging or assay equipment for radiopharmaceuticals when necessary.
- Assist in the initial implementation of new high‑technology equipment or new clinical procedures.
- Ensure radiation safety and regulatory requirements are met during routine operations.
- Investigate excessive radiation exposure to patients, technologists, or physicians.
- Provide information on radiation dose or exposure to patients and determine patient radiation dosimetry when needed, and investigate cases or procedures of significant or excessive radiation dose.
- Prepare for and be available for external or internal inspections that review quality control programs and radiation safety.
- Provide radiation safety specific to areas or procedures in hospitals or clinics; new facilities or room use changes or equipment moves require adequate shielding followed by verification of the shielding installation performed and accepted by licensed medical physicists.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PhD in Diagnostic Medical Physics and successful completion of an Imaging Physics residency program.
EducationPhD in Diagnostic Medical Physics and successful completion of an Imaging Physics residency program.
Experience0–3 years of experience in a Diagnostic Medical Physics, Nuclear Medicine Medical Physics, or Radiation Therapy Medical Physics position.
License(s), Certification(s), Registration(s) RequiredBoard Certified or board‑eligible by the American College of Radiology (A ).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with team members and independently.
