Schedule:

Monday-Friday as needed (flexible 20-29 hours weekly), minimal on-call nights/weekends

Overall Responsibility

Staff Pharmacist oversees technicians while maintaining a high level of customer service. Duties include, but are not limited to, counseling patients on prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication, filling and checking prescriptions, and ordering and maintaining prescription drug stock. Communication with customers, doctors, and other pharmacy associates is a top priority.

Key Tasks And Responsibilities (essential Functions)

Assists in supervision of and participates in, manufacturing, compounding, dispensing, bottling, packaging and labeling of such drugs or solutions as capsules, powders, suppositories, ointments, tablets, lotions and emulsions.

Inputs or supervises input of prescriptions and patient information into pharmacy computer system.

Maintains and reviews computer patient profiles and screens for incompatibilities, interactions, appropriateness of medications and patient compliance.

Ensures safe, accurate and efficient dispensing of prescription and controlled drugs to patients.

Maintains appropriate records of dispensing as required by state and federal laws, especially with regard to controlled drugs.

Assumes responsibility for ensuring that triplicate prescription forms for schedule II controlled substances are sent to Department of Public Safety in a timely fashion.

Provides accurate drug information to physicians, nurses, patients and other hospital personnel as needed.

Counsels patients on dosage, usage, storage, side effects and indications of medications prescribed.

Consults physicians to clarify inaccuracies, correct errors, notify of drug interactions or allergies, request substitutions or brand changes and obtain refill authorization.

Assumes responsibilities of ordering drugs and supplies and maintaining adequate but not excessive stock levels.

Maintains required invoices of purchases of controlled drugs and maintains order forms for schedule II controlled substances.

Supervises checking in, pricing, and storage of stock and entry of data into pharmacy computer inventory.

Provides prescription transfer information to and from pharmacies.

Maintains temperature log of pharmacy refrigerator and maintains cabinet for dispensing a two-day supply of medications to weekend hospital patients.

Participates in continuing education programs to maintain skills and satisfy current licensure requirements.

Inspects nursing stations, medication cart and emergency room for proper storage of medication, stock levels and out-of-date medications.

Manages pharmacy returns and destruction or removal of non-returnable out-of-date stock.

Contacts vendors to resolve errors in shipping and/or billing and requests set up of new accounts with vendors through purchasing when needed.

Participates in QA/PI activities of the hospital.

Reports information to the Pharmacy Director regarding problems, events or safety issues.

Provides completed reports to the Chief Nursing Officer for inclusion in Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee communications.

Ensures patient and hospital confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA Privacy rules.

Complies with hospital policies and procedures including personnel policies.

Required Experience

Licensure and Certification:

BCLS, if not current, certification within 90 days of hire.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Pharmacy.

Must be licensed and registered by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.

Experience Required

Three years of experience as a practicing pharmacist in a hospital preferred but will accept one year experience.

Cerner and Pyxis or equivalent.

Environmental and physical requirements - The employee works in a temperature controlled environment. Candidate must be able to read and speak English fluently, have cognitive skills for math, reading, computer skills, and communication skills to deal well with the public (customers) as well as peers. Vision for near, mid-range, and far accommodation. Job requires physical ability for standing, sitting, crouching, kneeling, frequent walking, reaching with reaching above head and below waist.

Job risks include exposure to blood and body fluids (high), contact with laser and chemicals, lifting of 30 - 50 pounds, and exposure to infectious disease.
