The position is located in the Forestry Division and covers several counties across Oklahoma. It includes a comprehensive benefits package and a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents.

Typical Functions
  • Collects forest health, volume, and extent data across private and public land in all 77 counties in Oklahoma. Locates historic research sites, coordinates access with landowners, and edits and transmits data to the US Forest Service.
  • Conducts timber inventory surveys; computes and analyzes collected data and summarizes results; assists operators and timber buyers in locating salable timber.
  • Facilitates and participates in meetings, conferences, and seminars on forest fire prevention and control, and forest management and conservation; develops and conducts training classes for employees, schools, civic groups, clubs and concerned citizens.
Level Description

This is the basic level of the Forester profession. Employees provide farmers, landowners, communities, and others with technical advice and service concerning their forestry programs and natural resource needs. Responsibilities include developing and implementing forestry conservation projects in an assigned district, analyzing forest resource conditions, drafting forest management plans, and advising landowners on management techniques. Educational and outreach duties to schools, civic groups, and local governments are also required.

Requirements for this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related natural resources degree.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must possess knowledge of dendrology, mensuration, forest management, silviculture, modern forestry methods, soil conservation principles, forest economics, timber inventory and regeneration methods, forest products marketing, and urban forestry. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, express ideas clearly in writing and verbally, and speak effectively before groups is required. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The position requires extensive travel (up to 90% of the year) and field work in all weather conditions. Employees may need to carry equipment up to 50 lbs., hike through difficult terrain, and in some instances, wade through water where other access is not available.

Additional Information

Selected applicants must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver License (or obtain one within 6 months of employment) and retain it throughout employment. Incumbents must obtain FIA certification within 5–7 months through the US Forest Service (paid). The position is subject to a twelve‑month probationary period.
