Wildlife Biologist

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Regional or Research Supervisor, the Wildlife Biologist is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing wildlife management and research projects. Duties include project budgeting, procurement, and oversight of subordinates, as well as scientific data collection, analysis, and reporting. The role serves as a departmental advisor and representative on technical matters and maintains extensive contact with public and private stakeholders.

Job Duties
  • Participate in the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of wildlife research and management projects.
  • Assist in establishing project goals and developing division objectives.
  • Collect and evaluate data, developing annual reports documenting survey results and population trends.
  • Interpret policies for subordinates and the public, and develop or implement procedures for assigned projects.
  • Assist in creating management or research plans, detailing specifications, time schedules, expenses, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Schedule work for contractors, cooperators, or subordinates to meet project objectives.
  • Establish liaison with intergovernmental agencies and private/public landowners; assist in public hearings on season and regulation changes.
  • Present programs to civic, educational, youth, professional, sportsmen, and environmental groups.
  • Review professional wildlife management literature to stay abreast of advances in the field.
  • Conduct surveys of assigned wildlife and plant species, and manage hunter access surveys.
  • Assist in supervision and management of hunting seasons and controlled hunts.
  • Assist with regional projects, prescribed burns, and related programs.
  • Plant food plots, mow, build or repair fences, maintain roads, and control or eliminate nuisance species.
  • Conduct habitat surveys to evaluate grazing or browsing pressure and habitat quality.
  • Make recommendations on management and other non‑wildlife issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Must Have the Ability To
  • Operate boats, motor vehicles, lawn mowers, tractors, and ATVs with attachments.
  • Operate and use firearms, cutting torches, and welding equipment.
  • Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds over a distance of 100 yards.
  • Push or pull a minimum of 50 pounds to hook up trailers, load boats, and other equipment.
  • Walk and jog over rough terrain for extended periods.
  • Swim.
  • Work alone in remote areas.
  • Endure various extremes of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work extended hours, weekends, and stay overnight out of town.
  • Handle wild animals in live and dead conditions, including dressing field game.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
  • Communicate clearly in public speaking and in writing.
  • Operate and use small handheld equipment and supplies.
  • Use personal computers and various office equipment.
  • Operate and use field traps, survey gear, and lab equipment.
  • Conduct day and night audio and visual surveys.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Wildlife Management or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Please attach a copy of your official transcript; applications will not be considered without it.
  • Experience: No previous experience required. Proficiency with GIS applications preferred.

    Skills:

    Must have knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of wildlife management, basic farming operations and equipment use, and basic supervision principles. Proficiency in computers and relevant software applications is required.
