Job Description

The laboratories of Dr. Busik and Dr. Proshlyakov in the Department of Biochemistry and Physiology are looking for a Laboratory Manager to supervise joint biomedical research space, which spans several areas of basic and translational research fields. Key emphasis includes diabetic retinopathy, mitochondrial function and repair, dyslipidemia, and bioengineering. Main experimental techniques include cell culture and animal models, lipidomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, spectroscopy, respirometry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, retinal function techniques, and microfabrication.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the development and implementation of laboratory operational policies and procedures for department's basic science researchers. Ensure infrastructure and resources required to perform effectively.
  • Establish and maintain an inventory control system for supplies and equipment. Place work orders for lab maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Oversee development and implementation of strategic goals for growth of basic science research labs. Manage projects to ensure financial, quality, service, and operational goals are achieved.
  • Develop methodologies and procedures for biomedical applications, analyze data, and present findings to scientific audience and general public.
  • Plan, develop, and manage projects to support departmental clinical and research missions, collaborating with researchers and medical staff, provide expertise to improve data acquisition and analysis, develop schedules and timelines, and implement standardized operating procedures.
  • Facilitate cross‑functional research interactions and opportunities among operating laboratories, researchers, and principal investigators.
  • Lead build‑outs, program analysis, and identify potential sponsored funding. Assist with planning and construction of new laboratory facilities and associated project reporting.
  • Plan, develop, and maintain training programs for Lab Technicians and Researchers. Ensure a safe working environment.
  • Provide management with summaries of project progress, risks, results, and queries related to laboratory performance.
  • Organize laboratory electronic planning and records, ensuring data traceability.
  • Establish workflow in compliance with EHS, Biosafety, IUCUC, and IRB protocols for laboratory projects.
  • Perform related duties as necessary to fulfill position functions.
Job Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Biological Science, Chemistry, or Physical Science (or related field).
  • 60 months experience in a basic science research facility, including 24 months as a senior‑level supervisor or leadership role in a research laboratory.
  • Alternatively, Bachelor's Degree plus 84 months total experience as described.
Skills
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory safety and Federal, State, and University guidelines.
  • Ability to train and supervise staff.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with computer applications relevant to the role.
  • Ability to analyze scientific data and publish in scientific journals.
