General DescriptionThe Biology Science Center TAP Tutor assists students with their lecture and lab material during scheduled hours in the Biology Science Center and online via Zoom. The tutor may also assist biology lab assistants with lab prep and cleaning.
Qualifications- Must have a grade of C or better in at least one biology course with a lab.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, materials, and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety and health procedures for handling hazardous chemicals and infectious organisms.
- Ability to orally communicate using English, laboratory procedures, and theoretical concepts to individual students or groups.
- Ability to understand science materials and explain concepts to students, including those not previously known.
- Positive human relations skills.
- Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect signs of hazards and obstacles that may cause injury to students and staff in the Biology Science Center or Group Labs.
- Completed one or more of the following with a B or better:
Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Microbiology, or Botany. - Proficiency in microscope use.
- Light work; may occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects.
- Must position self to access equipment in storage areas that may be above head or ground level.
- Must remain in a stationary position for sustained periods.
- Must move about the laboratory and campus.
- Must operate a computer and other laboratory equipment.
- Must frequently communicate with and listen to internal and external constituents to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must be subject to hazards, including proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and exposure to high heat or chemicals.
10–25 hours per week with a flexible schedule, including daytime, evening, and Saturday hours during the open hours of the Biology Science Center.
Job Duties- Assist and answer students’ questions concerning lecture and lab material.
- Assist students in individual lab exercises.
Understand, obey, and enforce all safety and health regulations applicable in a science laboratory. - Operate, maintain, adjust, and explain the use of equipment used in the Science Center.
- Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty, and staff while performing duties.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule assigned by the Science Center Supervisor.
- Assist biology lab assistants with lab prep, cleaning, or other BSC needs.
- Participate in required training and in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, and shelter-in-place drills.
- Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures.
- Contribute to a safe educational and working environment by adhering to established safety and health procedures and practices.
- Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.
