Job Title: Lifeguard I
Reports To: Aquatic Director
FLSA Type: Non‑Exempt
Location: Pete White Wellness Center (YMCA), Oklahoma City, OK
Position DescriptionTo provide for the welfare and safety of all participants in and around the swimming pool.
Duties and Responsibilities- Maintain current certification in CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid, renewed annually.
- Complete Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
- Remain mentally alert to potential dangers and ensure the safety of all swimmers.
- Be physically capable of moving with both arms and legs and properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200‑pound person.
- Read, write, and perform basic math.
- Remain alert in humid and hot conditions.
- Move to various locations, including around the pool and the elevated lifeguard station.
- Communicate verbally, projecting voice over distances.
- Handle irate or complaining individuals without personalizing comments.
- Demonstrate and perform rescue and lifesaving skills.
- Provide rescue and emergency care for any accident victim and record incidents on report forms.
- Prevent accidents by encouraging safe practices within established procedures.
- Maintain skills necessary for preventive lifeguarding, water rescues, CPR, First Aid, and dry‑land accident care.
- Attend monthly in‑service training.
- Abide by Y policies, pool rules, and all applicable health codes.
- Arrive ten minutes before duty and be on deck five minutes prior to assigned shifts; track hours on a time sheet.
- Find a qualified substitute when needed; the Aquatic Director or Coordinator must approve substitutes.
- Perform daily pool maintenance duties, including pool attendance.
- Lock and secure all pool doors when the pool is closed.
- Attend all required training or certification events.
- Walk or sit on the deck during guard assignments, never remaining seated for more than five minutes. Maintain an authoritative presence while projecting a positive image of genuine concern for pool users.
- Wear rescue equipment, staff uniform, and whistle while on duty.
- Notify supervisor of broken or unsafe equipment and remove it from service until repaired; report specific problems to the Aquatic Director.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Aquatic Director to support corporate goals within the Y mission.
- Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.
Efficiency and safety of the aquatic department are measured by staff morale, effective coordination of programs, accurate record keeping, and a clean, attractive facility that enables positive public relations.
Requirements- Certified in CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid (training provided by the Y if needed).
- At least 16 years of age.
- YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent certification by another nationally recognized organization.
- Cooperative spirit that promotes caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to staff, lay leaders, Y members, program participants, and the general public.
- Positive communication with pool patrons.
- Professional, alert, courteous, and tactful demeanor.
- Serious approach to job responsibilities and clear thinking in emergency situations.
- Strong water skills and top physical fitness.
Salary: Starting at $11.00 per hour
