: $40,600 - Level I; $47,100 - Level II

Job Description

Position Title:

Heavy Equipment Operator

Department:
Maintenance

District: 5 - Clinton

County Locations:
Beckham, Custer, Jackson, Tillman, Kiowa, Greer, Washita, Roger Mills, Blaine, Dewey, Harmon, Caddo County. Please indicate counties of interest when applying.

Candidates will be required to complete a pre‑employment background check, drug screening, and physical abilities test before beginning employment.

Basic Purpose

Operate power equipment and perform related maintenance and repair tasks on highways.

Typical Functions
  • Operations of heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front‑end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
  • Minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
  • Repair or replace signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
  • Provide traffic control using stop/slow signs or flags to direct highway traffic.
  • Apply herbicides to highway right‑of‑ways to control weeds and vegetation.
  • Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items, and other obstacles.
Level Descriptor

Level I – Basic level with close supervision, operating and maintaining power equipment and performing unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks.

Level II – Career level with skilled work at the full performance level in operating heavy equipment and routine highway maintenance duties.

Education and Experience
  • Level I – No education or experience required.
  • Level II – One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of power equipment or heavy machinery, manual labor ability, operating equipment, and following instructions.

Special Requirements
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with required endorsements may be required.
  • Commercial driver’s license, class A, required within five months for ODOT or Turnpike Authority positions.
  • ODOT employees require a CDL tank vehicle endorsement.
  • Applicant must pass a drug test before appointment.
  • Willingness and ability to perform all job‑related travel, work during non‑regular shifts during emergencies, and have a telephone in residence for on‑call duty messages.
  • Work requires standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, sitting, manipulating tools, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Regular lifting of up to 80 pounds, occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Some positions may be safety‑sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.
