The Substance Use Education & Prevention Specialist serves as a key liaison between students, families, schools, and community agencies to promote student wellness. This role includes leading the district’s opioid and substance use prevention efforts, managing student wellness initiatives, coordinating addiction and cessation programs, and facilitating mental health supports. The Specialist will design and implement educational programs, collaborate with school teams, support data tracking and monitoring, and provide direct outreach and resources to students and families.
This position is funded in part by tobacco class action settlement funds.
- Develop and implement an evidence‑based Opioid and Substance Use Education & Prevention Program for students, staff, and families.
- Collaborate with school‑based Student Services teams to identify student wellness barriers and design support plans.
- Coordinate prevention activities and facilitate access to school and community‑based services in the areas of addiction, tobacco cessation, and mental health.
- Serve as liaison to community partners, including mental health agencies and substance use specialists.
- Provide ongoing training and educational resources (e.g., videos, seminars, infographics) to enhance awareness and prevention.
- Support and monitor student participation in wellness and cessation programs.
- Evaluate and expand the district’s current naloxone training and opioid response protocols.
- Communicate effectively with all stakeholders; respond to inquiries in a courteous and timely manner.
- Maintain accurate, timely records and manage data collection and reporting.
- Organize and lead focus groups, presentations, and outreach activities.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all district health, safety, and child protection policies.
- Attend relevant trainings and complete a minimum of 8 hours of opioid/substance use education.
- Frequent collaboration and communication in team environments.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or administration.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in nursing, social work, public health, education, or related field.
- Preference for nursing or mental health background.
- Valid Kansas license (e.g., teaching, nursing, or other professional certification).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
- Experience or willingness to work with students, families, school personnel, and various community/state/federal organizations on health and wellness topics.
- Current driver’s license and reliable transportation for local travel.
- Confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism are essential.
- Experience working in education or school‑based support roles (e.g., teacher, para educator, nurse, social worker).
- Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
- Familiarity with student management software and community health resources.
This position requires the performance of light work with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. The position includes occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed in generally hazard‑free environment and a clean atmosphere.
