Job OverviewThe Planner II is a mid‑level Planner position responsible for leading diverse work primarily related to current development proposals, permit reviews, and long‑range planning initiatives. The role requires facilitation of in‑person and virtual meetings and workshops, the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously, attention to detail, and a focus on big‑picture goals. Attendance at a substantial number of evening meetings is required.
This position is part of a three‑level career progression:
Planner I, Planner II, and Senior Planner.
- Evaluate or assist in reviewing increasingly complex development proposals, including plans, plats, rezonings, special uses, and other current planning proposals; prepare and present detailed reports to government bodies and committees; assist with planning and community development studies, researching, and analyzing demographic and statistical data in accordance with local and national planning trends and initiatives.
- Conduct permit reviews, field evaluations, assessments, and zoning enforcement; write or assist in writing ordinances and regulations related to development controls.
- Develop long‑range plans and studies to promote economic and community development consistent with community goals.
- Serve as liaison with other City departments and outside agencies/organizations on various planning cases, projects, and activities.
- Act as planner of the day, assisting the public with planning and zoning related questions and research.
- Experience: Two years in urban planning or a related field required; well‑developed knowledge of planning principles and practices and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Education: Master’s degree in urban planning or a related field required; additional experience may substitute for education.
