Position Summary
Job : R-46529 Job Type: Part time Location: Olathe, Kansas
The Sign Language Interpreter position is responsible for providing equal access to deaf/hard of hearing patients and their families/significant others by interpreting in American Sign Language, transliterating English or matching the mode of communication best understood by the patient.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions- Assist with scheduling appointments, coordinating with multiple departments/entities to make the best use of time and resources.
- Assist with provision of services in the private practices of physicians who have contractual agreements with Olathe Medical Center, Inc.
- Consistently meets work schedule.
- Demonstrates a full understanding of Deaf Culture and the ability to anticipate and recognize the potential for issues that may arise from differing cultural assumptions and expectations of providers and patients. Demonstrates ability to respond to such issues appropriately.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with the deaf/hard of hearing patients and/or their families/significant others regardless of their language level or preferred mode of communication. This service is provided across all OHSI entities.
- Demonstrates ability to respond within 30 minutes or less when providing call coverage.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to reset closed captioning at patient request.
- Demonstrates the ability to conduct telephone communication in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ensures continuity of care by placement of required signage and accurate and appropriate reporting to the next shift.
- Makes clear communication a priority, teaming with other staff interpreters when necessary to ensure accuracy. In extreme situations suggests using intermediary/deaf interpreter for highly visual consumers.
- Supports team members by providing relief during lengthy assignments, covering for lunch breaks, completing confirmations and day end tasks as well as completing assigned projects that will benefit the team.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Education and Experience
- Associates Degree in a related field of study from an accredited college or university AND
- 1 or more years of demonstrated medical interpreting experience OR
- 5 or more years of demonstrated medical interpreting experience.

- Bachelors Degree in a related field of study from an accredited college or university.
- Certification through Kansas Quality Assurance Screening at Level 4 (Interpreting) and Level 4 (Transliterating) or above, or Missouri Certification - Advanced Level or above, or National Interpreter Certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
