Job Description Summary

At Penn Public Safety, our mission is to enhance the quality of life, safety and security of our community. This website provides an overview of some of the services we offer to those living, working and visiting Penn’s campus. University Police Officers are responsible for the operational law enforcement functions of the Division of Public Safety, including protection of life and property, preservation of peace, maintenance of good order, and responding to calls for service.

Candidates must possess Act 120 certification and must be a graduate of a Pennsylvania municipal police academy, or obtain an out-of-state waiver through MPOTEC, or be actively enrolled in a Pennsylvania municipal police academy. Responsibilities
  • Perform operational law enforcement functions as part of the Division of Public Safety, including protection of life and property, preservation of peace, maintenance of good order, and responding to calls for service.
  • Mediate domestic and other disputes to preserve peace and prevent crime.
  • Identify pre-delinquent and delinquent acts by juveniles with appropriate disposition.
  • Explain the functions and responsibilities of the Department to community members.
  • Protect rights to assemble peacefully in accordance with guidelines on open expression.
  • Provide police and customer services, including enforcing laws, counseling, first aid, and general assistance as required.
  • Utilize proactive policing techniques to prevent criminal activity and enhance community quality of life.
  • Regulate vehicular and pedestrian traffic to optimize flow.
  • Enforce Federal, State, City and University laws and regulations through patrols, investigations, inspections, and the apprehension and prosecution of violators.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and prepare reports for stakeholders and prevention education.
  • Investigate criminal offenses, identify suspects, arrest, and testify in proceedings as needed.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records essential to department operations and management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED and 0 to 1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Candidates must possess Act 120 certification (graduate of a Pennsylvania municipal police academy or an out-of-state academy recognized by MPOETC or actively enrolled in a Pennsylvania municipal police academy) and a valid driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age.

This position is essential personnel (24 hours/7 days) and may require weekend and holiday assignments.
