Position Summary

The Platemaker is responsible for organizing, preparing and outputting Flexo plates to insure that all work centers in production have plates staged for the next scheduled job. This responsibility extends from the point that the final art file is released for plating to submission of plates to production. The Platemaker is to maintain direct and open communication with the Art, Customer Service and Production Departments in regard to the status of all working jobs.

The Platemaker’s function is vital to insure the uninterrupted workflow of the production schedule.

Essential Functions
  • Processes plates from final art files submitted from the Production Artists.
  • Pulls and verifies plates needed, for production runs, 24 hours before scheduled to print.
  • Maintains a working relationship with our consumable vendors.
  • Maintains an acceptable inventory of plate room consumables.
  • Maintains an accurate written & computerized log of material entries.
  • Maintains an accurate log of bench micrometer readings & makes periodic adjustments to plate room equipment based on the readings.
  • Understands and follows proper safety procedures.
  • Maintains a well-organized filing system for orders in process and completed orders.
  • Coordinates and conducts regularly scheduled preventive maintenance and calibration of all plate related equipment within the department.
  • Maintains a neat, clean and well organized work area.
  • Takes precautions to protect equipment, property and product against loss.
  • Suggests improvements to plate procedures, and acts to improve quality, timeliness or reduce costs.
  • Adheres to all quality control processes and procedures and actively supports the company’s internal audit program.
  • Participation and support of 5S initiatives and activities.
  • Provides back-up support for Make Ready, including operating precision equipment, examining plates and materials for conformance to specifications, using the production schedule to pre-stage press-ready jobs with dies, print cylinders, and ensuring continuous operation of press work centers.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities as directed by management.
Skills and Experience Required
  • 1-2 years relevant experience in plate making or printing preferred.
  • High school diploma / GED / or equivalent.
  • Candidate should possess basic mathematical skills.
  • Individual must be able to monitor processes, materials and equipment.
  • Individual must be able to work independently with minimal guidance required. This implies good time management, planning/organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Individual must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, maintaining flexibility, objectivity and a capacity to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Candidate should be familiar with word processing and other basic computer skills.
  • English language required.
Physical and Other Requirements

This job is performed indoors in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. Job tasks are performed in close proximity to other people and include exposure to strobe lights, sounds and noise levels that could be distracting. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, bend or crouch. The employee must frequently stand, walk, talk, and occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include ability to hear alarms and other sensors in a factory environment. Requires use of hands to handle, control or feel objects and operate tools and controls.
