We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Freight Broker to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for growing your book of clients and managing all aspects of the freight transportation process, from initial booking to final delivery. The ideal candidate has excellent communication and negotiation skills, extensive industry knowledge, and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service.

This is a hybrid role and will require 3 days a week on-site at our office in Olathe, Kansas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Market knowledge:Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market trends, pricing fluctuations, and industry developments to advise clients effectively.

Sales and client development:Generate leads and attract new clients (shippers) while maintaining strong relationships with existing ones. Understand client shipping needs to provide customized, cost-effective transportation solutions.

Carrier relations:Identify, vet, and build a network of reliable and safe carriers. Negotiate competitive rates and contracts with carriers to meet profit margin goals.

Logistics coordination:Coordinate all aspects of the shipment process, including scheduling pickup and delivery times, to ensure timely and undamaged arrival. Match carrier availability with client needs.

Shipment tracking:Monitor shipments in transit and provide timely updates to clients on their status.

Documentation and compliance:Prepare and process necessary shipping documents, such as bills of lading (BOL), and ensure all activities comply with federal regulations and company policies.

Problem resolution:Proactively address and resolve any issues that may arise during the shipping process, such as delays, damages, or other unforeseen exigencies.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • High school diploma or GED is required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Business, or a related field is a plus.
  • 2+ years of work experience as a freight broker or in a similar role within the transportation/logistics industry.
  • An established book of business is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with shippers, carriers, and dispatchers.
  • Excellent negotiation, sales, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess carrier performance and make informed decisions.
  • Proficiency in transportation management software (TMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively.
