We are hiring either a Road Maintenance Trainee or Road Maintenance Worker I which fall within a career progression program giving employees the opportunity for advancement. Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required, but employees may be hired as a full time Road Maintenance Trainee on a temporary basis as long as required licensure is obtained within six months.

Responsibilities- Performs routine semi-skilled and skilled tasks under close supervision in the completion of general road maintenance tasks, including construction, maintenance and repair of roads, rights of way and other County infrastructure; spreads and tamp asphalt to repair joints and patch broken pavement; cuts and prepares road surfaces for pothole repair and sealing of roadway cracks; spreads sand, gravel, and clay to fill washouts and repair road shoulders;
removes litter and debris from roadways and debris from flooding to ensure roadways are passable; performs roadside landscaping such as mowing, clearing weeds, cutting brush and trimming trees to maintain a clear recovery zone for motorists; installs erosion control materials to facilitate roadside vegetation restoration. - Operates equipment, vehicles, and tools; performs pre-trip inspections of trucks and equipment; conducts field maintenance to operate equipment; uses various tools and operates light-duty road maintenance equipment and attachments including trucks, skid steer loader, compact rollers, mini excavator, power broom, and snow removal equipment; performs general and routine maintenance of light duty equipment.
- Participates in emergency response activities including sign repair, road closures, flood response, and snow plowing and sanding.
- Minimum Job Requirements: A high school diploma or equivalent and valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. A Class A CDL with tanker endorsement is required for the Road Maintenance Worker I position, but full-time trainees have six months to obtain required licensure to maintain employment and advance in the career progression plan.
- Background/Reference Checks: Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Criteria may vary by Department/Agency.
- Education/Experience Substitutions: Experience may be substituted for degree.
- Physical/Environmental/Special Working Conditions: Excessive standing and/or walking – 80%;
Lifting – 50 lbs;
Travel required:
50% local and 5% outside Johnson County;
Weather essential job; PPE as required. - Position may require responding to emergency and after-hours work, including holidays, weekends, and nights; overtime may be required.
