LEARN, Southern Connecticut's Regional Educational Service Center, invites candidates to apply for Substitute Support Staff openings at our Creating Connections Early Learning Center in Waterford, Connecticut.
General Scope Of ResponsibilitiesThe Substitute Support Staff provides temporary classroom support in the absence of regular staff, assisting teachers and Site Coordinator in maintaining a safe, caring, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. The Substitute helps carry out daily routines, supports child engagement, and ensures continuity of care and instruction. Substitutes follow established lesson plans and directions from classroom staff or supervisors and adapt to varying classroom needs.
Relationshipwithin the Organization
The Substitute Support Staff reports directly to the Site Coordinator and/or designated Head Teacher for the assignment day.
Classroom and Activity Support- Follow instructions from the classroom teacher or Site Coordinator to implement planned activities and routines.
- Support classroom setup, cleanup, and transitions as needed.
- Supervise children in classroom, outdoor, and meal settings to ensure safety.
- Engage with children to support learning and social-emotional development.
- Assist with individual and group activities.
- Carry out basic clerical tasks as assigned (e.g., taking attendance, preparing materials).
- Document any incidents or observations as required.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with children, families, and staff.
- Refer family questions to teacher, head teacher, or Site Coordinator.
- Promote safe behaviors, hygiene, and positive routines by modeling and guiding children appropriately.
- Report any concerns regarding a child’s safety or development to the head teacher or Site Coordinator immediately.
- Follow all center policies, OEC licensing regulations, and safety protocols.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics at all times.
- Arrive on time and be prepared to work in various classrooms and age groups as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or experience in Early Childhood Education preferred.
- Infant/Child CPR and First Aid certification preferred (required for long-term substitute placements).
- Medication Administration and Epi-Pen training preferred.
- Prior experience working with children in a group setting preferred.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to follow directions.
- Positive attitude and willingness to engage with young children.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and responsive in a dynamic environment.
- Attend required substitute orientation or training sessions.
- Participate in professional development as requested for long-term substitute roles.
- Must clear a comprehensive background check through state and/or agency requirements.
- Must pass a health screening.
- Ability to lift and/or carry a child up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to move freely and engage with children on their level (e.g., kneeling, sitting on the floor).
