Introduction

The DEEP Marine Fisheries Program is recruiting for Seasonal Resource Assistants (SRAs) to work within 5 different projects (each described in the Examples of Duties section below). SRAs will be hired for a specific project and will spend most of their time working on that project. Each project is based out of DEEP Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme, CT.

Selection Plan

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by the hiring division anticipated for March/April 2025. If offered employment, new hires must complete all paperwork, including providing a valid  documents for Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9). Employment is contingent upon a successful background check. DEEP is committed to a safe, nondiscriminatory environment. Purpose of Job Class

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, performs seasonal tasks and duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties
  • American Shad & Sturgeon Project: Sampling aboard small boats using various fishing gear, laboratory fish processing, gear maintenance, data entry, and public outreach. Must lift and move 50 lbs and handle gear in various conditions.
  • Long Island Sound Trawl Survey Project: Assisting with trawl net deployment, gear maintenance, biological sample processing, data entry, and onboard electronic data system implementation.
  • Commercial Fisheries Statistics Project: Data entry and error checking of confidential catch reports, follow-up with license holders, and public inquiries about regulations.
  • Marine Angler Survey Project: Interacting with anglers, conducting interviews, organizing and entering data, and answering public questions.
  • Research Vessel John Dempsey: Performing maintenance, assisting with sampling, and supporting the Long Island Sound Trawl Survey Project duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to follow instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in biological sciences, fisheries, boating, fish identification, data management, fish aging, customer service, and mechanical tasks, among others.

Special Requirements

First aid certification, valid driver’s license, pesticide license, EMT certification, lifeguard certification, and other specific qualifications may be required depending on the position.

Physical Requirements

Must possess adequate strength and stamina; lifeguard positions require Red Cross waterfront lifeguarding skills.
