Plaster Technician
Join Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust as a Plaster Technician. The role is based at The Royal Oldham Hospital, Oldham (OL1 2JH
). It is a full‑time, permanent position at Band 4, with a salary range of £27,485 to £30,162 a year.
The main outpatient department at Oldham Hospital hosts clinics across several specialities. The Trauma & Orthopaedic team requires an experienced orthopaedic casting technician or nurse associate holding a British Orthopaedic Association Plaster Certificate. The successful candidate will support Trauma and Orthopaedic clinics and trauma in‑patients in a demanding plaster room environment, working under pressure, independently and autonomously. Flexibility is essential – the role covers the working week between 08:30 and 18:00, with occasional weekend and evening work up to 20:00 on an ad‑hoc basis.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction to patients/carers regarding plaster care and encourage patient/carer involvement.
- Ensure practice in casting and bracing techniques throughout the Trust is underpinned by best practice and evidence‑based practice.
- Maintain patient safety, comfort, privacy, and dignity.
- Contribute to the effective structure of clinics.
- Maintain a professional attitude in approach and appearance.
- Network with colleagues to ensure best practice.
- Stay appraised of current advances in casting care and facilitate their implementation.
- Support, supervise, and provide educational direction to clinic staff in the plaster room environment.
- Apply knowledge of incident reporting and root cause analysis.
- Maintain all equipment and consumables required for the plaster room to function safely.
- Assist in controlling stock limits, requisitioning departmental stores and equipment.
- Ensuring all equipment is functional and meets service requirements.
- Undertake risk assessments of the environment and use of all associated equipment.
- Work as directed in an appropriate clinic environment when specific plaster room skills are not required.
- British Casting Certificate.
- Qualified orthopaedic technician or nurse associate with a casting certificate.
- Ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service.
- Experience of working in demanding situations and to deadlines.
- Willingness to undertake relevant further study or training.
- Demonstrate skills and knowledge in a range of casting techniques.
- Good communication skills (written & verbal).
- Good customer service skills.
- Wound care skills.
- Venepuncture skill.
