This is a technologist position in the clinical laboratory with responsibility for performing multiple complex procedures in the histology section. The individual works independently under the general supervision of a pathologist and the laboratory administrative director with responsibility for performing routine and special procedures in histology.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities- Technical and Problem Solving:
Prepares all specimens and samples for analysis by pathologist. Retrieves surgical specimens from the operating room daily insuring proper specimen identification and fixation. Evaluates specimens for suitability for processing and resolves problems related to specimen collection. - Maintains quality control records and processes. Ensures all processes adhere to CLIA CAP and OSHA regulations as indicated. Monitors frozen section area daily to assure proper cryostat function temperature and supplies. Performs daily and scheduled maintenance and function checks on instruments/equipment and documents action performed. Recognizes instrument malfunction halts immediately and with aid of operators manual or hotline attempts to resolve problem.
- Development:
Maintains current knowledge certification and licensure. Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. Completes all mandatory requirements certifications and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (License PPD Competencies Age Specifics etc.). - Organizational knowledge:
Works effectively within and between departments. Maintains awareness of changes in procedures or protocols. Attends department meetings as required or reads/initials meeting minutes within the specified time frame if not in attendance. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees. - Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties - Maintains histology and cytology procedure manuals with annual revisions to be reviewed by pathologist annually. Assists with the instruction of laboratory personnel in theory technical skills safety protocols and application of laboratory test procedures.
- Sets up and assists with the daily gross examination of surgical specimens. Processes embeds and cuts tissues daily in a timely manner without artifacts. Is proficient in histology equipment operation and troubleshooting. Performs routine special and immunohistochemistry staining as requested.
- Records corrective action taken. Maintains supplies in histology section and cytology subsection so that shortages do not occur. Properly stores and disposes of flammable and toxic materials. Disinfects and cleans all work areas promptly upon completion of work. Completes annual departmental competencies within specified time frame. Assists with performance improvement initiatives when indicated.
- Accessions specimens using histology computer labeling program to facilitate grossing by pathologists. Maintains slides blocks and tissues files in numerical order for appropriate length of time per policy. Adheres to all safety protocols including standard precautions transmission-based precautions and other infection control policies.
- Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff supervisors and managers both inside and outside the unit. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees communicating unit knowledge as appropriate.
- Associate's degree as a Histology Technologist or completion of a program offered by the armed forces or vocational school in histology field, required.
- 1-2 years Experience in clinical lab preferred
- HT - Histotechnician - ASCP HT or HTL (ASCP) Registry, required.
Skills And Abilities
- Ability to read write speak and comprehend English.
- Moderate Computer skills to perform Data entry and specimen verification.
- Computerized laboratory information systems.
- HIPAA policies on Confidentiality
- Knowledge of grossing cutting and sectioning of specimens
This position has a hiring range of USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 /Hr.
