Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards.
  • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed, including patrol of the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle if required.
  • Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
  • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations and activities; maintains department records, reports and files as required.
  • Proficiently utilizes non‑violent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite.
  • Provides assistance for way‑finding, parking, deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and Med Star affiliates.
  • Responds to security and medical code calls, investigates incidents and accidents, gathers information and evidence, notifies appropriate authorities or superiors, and calls for back‑up assistance as necessary.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings and trials.
  • Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required; observes and monitors conditions, objects or persons that might require police action.
  • Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings; reports all safety, security and law violations.
  • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
  • Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
  • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law‑enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts; participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimal Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.
Experience
  • 1–2 years related security or law‑enforcement experience required, or
  • 1–2 years Med Star service experience in lieu of security experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid State Driver's License (DL) in good standing required.
  • MD Special Police Commission (MDSPC) preferred.
  • Special Police Officer – DC (SPO) preferred; if hired, the SPO must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain the SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
  • IAHSS certification as a Security Officer preferred.
  • CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) including BLS and NRP for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
  • Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation and crisis prevention intervention.
