The Inpatient Facility Medical Coder is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and MS-DRG codes to inpatient facility encounters. This position ensures compliance with official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and payer-specific rules to support accurate reimbursement, quality reporting, and organizational data integrity.

What You'll Do:

  • Review and analyze inpatient medical records to assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes.
  • Apply official coding guidelines, coding clinic advice, and facility-specific policies.
  • Ensure accurate assignment of MS-DRGs and APR-DRGs for reimbursement and case mix index optimization.
  • Validate coding accuracy through clinical documentation review.
  • Collaborate with providers, interdepartmental staff, and compliance teams for documentation clarification.
  • Ensure coding practices are in compliance with federal and state regulations, including CMS guidelines, OIG recommendations, and other applicable industry standards.
  • Meet departmental productivity and accuracy standards.
What We're Looking For:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certification:
    Current CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent, continuous inpatient coding experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG assignment, and federal/state regulations.
  • Experience with encoder software, electronic health records (EHR), and computer-assisted coding (CAC) tools preferred.
  • Proficiency in using coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with healthcare providers and other team members.
  • Commitment to ongoing education and professional development to maintain coding certifications and stay current with industry standards.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic healthcare environment with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and data security.
