Base pay range

$18.00/hr - $24.00/hr

Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and veterinary technicians to ensure the well‑being of pets, educate clients, and maintain the highest standards of veterinary care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in surgery, dentistry, laboratory procedures, venipuncture, restraint techniques, and sterile environment protocols.
  • Contribute to the day‑to‑day efficiency and smooth operation of the hospital.
  • Use exceptional communication skills to engage team members and clients.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate medical charting for all patients.
  • Educate clients about Wellness Plans and pet care.
  • Assume select reception duties such as answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, and facilitating patient intake/discharge.
  • Obtain pertinent medical history and patient information.
  • Assist in managing hospital supplies, including inventory tracking and restocking.
  • Ensure completion of all assigned duties before shift end.
  • Advocate for overall success and performance of the hospital.
Customer Service Delivery
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills with the veterinary team and clients.
  • Adapt to individual client needs.
  • Resolve customer complaints appropriately.
Other
  • Adhere to OSHA standards and company policies.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Enhance and acquire new veterinary technical skills such as anesthesia, surgical assistance, and dentistry.
  • Work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Multi‑task effectively and set priorities.
  • Remain calm and resilient in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Exhibit proactive initiative.
  • Maintain accuracy despite interruptions.
  • Learn new computer software systems (EMR, scheduling, etc.).
  • Provide a high level of accountability.
Experience / Knowledge In
  • Handling dogs, cats, and exotic animals.
  • Basic animal care: feeding, bathing, grooming, monitoring for distress or illness.
  • Common medical procedures: medication administration, wound care, diagnostic assistance.
Demonstrates
  • Strong customer service focus with adaptability.
  • Excellent communication and ability to manage emotional situations with empathy.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 6+ months of experience in the veterinary industry.
  • Completion of an NAVTA‑approved veterinary assistant program or equivalent training (preferred).
Work Location, Environment, and

Physical Requirements
  • Position is on‑site at the hospital or approved off‑site event location.
  • Environmental factors: limited space, pet waste odors, noise.
  • Schedule may include 10+ hour shifts, Saturdays, evenings, and holidays.
  • Requirements: good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift 50+ pounds, ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb.
  • Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, biological hazards, anesthesia meds, radiation near X‑ray, prescription meds.
