Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The Organist and Choirmaster will be responsible for playing the organ and leading the parish choir at Sunday and Holy Day Masses, and at other occasional services, such as Evensong, and Lessons and Carols. The Organist and Choirmaster works closely with the Pastor, as well as other musicians, to implement a program of sacred music in accordance with the Ordinariate’s liturgical expression of the Roman Rite and the Anglican patrimony.

  • Serve as organist and choirmaster for the principal Sunday Mass (currently 9:30 am), as well as Holy Days of Obligation, and other important days such as Candlemas, Ash Wednesday, the Sacred Triduum, and occasional services such as Solemn Evensong (monthly, quarterly, or semiannually, as required) and Lessons and Carols.
  • Program music for all of the above.
  • Ensure that all music conforms to the texts and rubrics of the Ordinariate’s liturgical books:
    Divine Worship: the Missal, Daily Office, and Occasional Services.
  • Manage the activities and schedules of the cantors, choir, and instrumentalists of liturgies and special events. Develop musicians' musical abilities and understanding of the liturgy.
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Active participation in a Catholic Church setting as organist, music director, or advanced student.
  • Repertoire of organ music and the ability to improvise.
  • Familiarity and facility with English and Latin Mass texts.
  • Be proficient in the theology of the liturgy, guidelines of the Church regarding sacred music, the tradition of Catholic sacred music, including hymnody and plainchant, and familiarity with the English choral tradition, including Anglican chant.
  • Must be a practicing Catholic.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Music or related field.
