Substation Project Structural Engineer – HDR
HDR is looking for a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our growing national Power Delivery team. In this role, you will apply your technical knowledge of high‑voltage substation design to deliver reliable, resilient, and sustainable power infrastructure, collaborating with project managers and multidisciplinary teams across multiple office locations.
Responsibilities- Execute structural engineering tasks for a variety of substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes (detailed design, calculations, detailing, and fabrication drawings).
- Execute foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles using industry‑standard software.
- Prepare and/or review construction and material specifications.
- Assign project tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non‑structural project team members.
- Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables per HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers, working independently when required.
- Execute multiple projects concurrently and collaborate with teams in different locations.
- Participate in project reviews as needed.
- Travel may be required.
- Technical design experience with physical/outdoor high‑voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, and related industry standards.
- Experience with PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, Micro Station, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile or equivalent design software.
- Minimum five years of technical design experience with high voltage switchyard and substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Knowledge of AISC‑360, ASCE‑7, ACI‑318, and other relevant standards.
- Self‑starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional engineering license (PE, P.Eng, or equivalent) recognized by the relevant licensing board.
- Previous structural engineering experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar.
- Experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.

The targeted salary range for this position is $90,682 – $145,990 based on experience and location.
