Job Title:
Industrial Engineer
Job Description
The Industrial Engineer acts as a problem-solver, change agent, resource, designer, and project manager within a large manufacturing environment. This role drives key manufacturing initiatives, including process flow optimization, value stream mapping, 5S methodologies, and the evaluation of large data sets. The primary objective is to design and implement streamlined processes that improve efficiency, productivity, and overall performance across the plant.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute manufacturing improvement initiatives focused on optimizing process flows, reducing waste, and increasing efficiency across the plant.
- Develop, analyze, and refine process flows to improve throughput, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance overall operational performance.
- Create and maintain value stream maps to identify inefficiencies, prioritize improvement opportunities, and track progress over time.
- Conduct detailed time studies to establish accurate labor standards, balance production lines, and support capacity planning.
- Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies to drive measurable improvements in quality, cost, and delivery.
- Analyze large data sets and operational metrics, including OEE and other performance indicators, to identify trends, root causes, and improvement opportunities.
- Design and improve manufacturing processes, tooling, and layouts to support new products, process changes, and productivity enhancements.
- Collaborate closely with production support, engineering, and cross-functional teams on the manufacturing floor to implement and sustain process improvements.
- Use engineering tools and software, such as AutoCAD, to design or modify layouts, tooling, and process-related documentation.
- Support and lead change management efforts related to new processes, standards, and workflows, ensuring effective communication and adoption on the shop floor.
- Participate in or lead projects as a project manager, including planning, scheduling, coordinating resources, and tracking project milestones and deliverables.
- Contribute to 5S and workplace organization initiatives to create a safe, efficient, and well-structured production environment.
- Support line balancing activities to optimize staffing, equipment utilization, and workflow across manufacturing lines.
- Document process improvements, standard work, and best practices to ensure consistency and sustainability of changes.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in engineering.
- At least 4 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with continuous improvement in manufacturing settings.
- Practical knowledge and application of Lean, Six Sigma, or Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
- Proficiency in industrial engineering concepts, including process engineering and process improvement.
- Experience conducting time studies and using results to set standards and balance production lines.
- Background in manufacturing engineering and manufacturing processes, particularly in a high-volume environment.
- Ability to perform value stream mapping to analyze and improve end-to-end processes.
- Strong data analysis skills, including evaluation of large data sets to support decision-making.
- Experience with tooling and design within a manufacturing context.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar engineering design software.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, organizing, and executing engineering projects.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a focus on measurable results.
- Ability to work effectively on the manufacturing floor and collaborate with production and support teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with Lean manufacturing principles in a large, complex facility.
- Familiarity with OEE and other operational performance metrics.
- Experience in line balancing and workflow optimization.
- Exposure to 5S and other workplace organization initiatives.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Interest in career growth into leadership roles within engineering or operations.
- Motivation to participate in career development and educational assistance programs.
Work Environment
This role is based in a very large manufacturing facility of nearly 500,000 square feet that produces sheet metal shelving units similar to those used in major retail stores. The building is older and…
