Job Description

The Judicial Branch is a state‑funded branch of government that offers medical, dental and vision benefits, $20,000 free basic life insurance, a state‑matched 156% retirement plan, 13 paid holidays, earned paid vacation and sick leave, and more. The administrative office of the courts and probation (AOCP) is accepting applications for a full‑time District Courtroom Clerk/Official Court Reporter in Douglas County District Court, 4th Judicial District.

Travel is expected. The role reports directly to District Court Judge Derek Vaughn and involves verbatim reporting and transcribing for court proceedings, hearings and conferences.

Responsibilities
  • Enter case information in DOCKET, a component of the JUSTICE court case management system, to generate judicial orders and official records.
  • Type portions of judge’s decisions in real time and operate electronic recording equipment to record official court records.
  • Play back recordings for judges or juries as requested and maintain automated logs of proceedings.
  • Mark and log exhibits as they are entered into the record, noting witness appearances and session times.
  • Supervise witness sign‑ins and maintain courtroom supplies.
  • Prepare and distribute transcripts and related reports, preserving records of exhibits and notes.
  • Perform clerical duties related to the court, attend meetings and training sessions, and maintain knowledge of court rules and procedures.
  • Maintain and store court recordings and ensure secure backup storage.
  • Travel may be required and duties may include sitting behind a computer or other equipment for extended periods, repetitive motions, and occasional late hours.
Qualifications
  • District Courtroom Clerk – Minimum: High school graduation or equivalent; higher education may substitute for work experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Court Reporter I – Minimum: Demonstrate professional competence as defined in Nebraska Supreme Court Rules Relating to Court Reporting Personnel, including passing 1‑204(A)(2) and 1‑204(B) or (C) examinations and/or the AAERT Certified Electronic Court Reporter and Transcriber tests.
  • Court Reporter II – Minimum: Demonstrate professional competence as defined in Nebraska Supreme Court Rules, be certified as a Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) or Federal Certified Realtime Reporter (FCRR).
  • All educational credits must be from an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Preferred: Legal experience; bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Successful completion of on‑the‑job training in JUSTICE within six months of hire for the Clerk; for Reporters, demonstrate professional competence per applicable Nebraska Supreme Court rules.
Hiring Rate (during Probation)
  • District Courtroom Clerk: $40,169.98 per year
  • Court Reporter I: $56,523.21 per year
  • Court Reporter II: $65,432.65 per year
Minimum Rate (after Probation)
  • District Courtroom Clerk: $41,174.29 per year
  • Court Reporter I: $57,936.28 per year
  • Court Reporter II: $67,068.51 per year
