SCHEDULE:

Monday-Friday. Flexible 8-hour shift between the hours of 6a-6p.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Responsible for thorough and accurate coding of diseases and procedures of each inpatient/hospital record using ICD‑10‑CM, ICD‑10‑PCS, 3M encoder and ensuring correct assignment of the Medicare Severity‑Diagnosis Related Group (MS‑DRG) or All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Group (APR‑DRG).
  • Verify the patient's discharge disposition and ensure the appropriate present‑on‑admission (POA) indicators are assigned to each code, supporting the reason for the visit that is documented by the provider.
  • Assist with writing appeals or resolving coding & reimbursement issues with Patient Financial Services staff and third‑party payers for DRG issues and denials, supporting the assigned DRG and addressing clinical documentation to validate the assigned codes.
  • Collaborate with the CDI team and medical staff to ensure complete documentation so that appropriate codes and the correct DRG may be assigned, maximizing revenue and reimbursement opportunities.
  • Remain abreast of current CMS requirements, CCI edits, HACs, NCDs, LCDs, and add appropriate modifiers to ensure a clean claim the first time through.
  • Conduct focused coding/encounter audits across multi‑specialty practices, providing brief yet detailed accounts of findings and suggested action plans for corrected claims and provider/staff education to the Hospital Coding Supervisor.
  • Provide back‑up to the Professional Coding team as needed to meet all coding group KPIs and metrics.
  • Abide by the Standards of Ethical Coding set by AHIMA and adhere to official coding guidelines and organizational compliance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Apply thorough knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM and ICD‑10‑PCS coding with sustained accuracy of 95% or greater while maintaining acceptable productivity metrics.
  • Apply knowledge of medical terminology, disease process, and anatomy and physiology to hospital coding practices.
  • Apply working knowledge of coding classification systems including DRGs and APR‑DRGs.
  • Function independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing with staff, physicians, and patients.
  • Know medical record content including electronic medical records (EMRs).
  • Type 30 wpm with at least 90% accuracy.
  • Make rapid and accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Maintain current and accurate records.
  • Treat patient information with strict confidentiality.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Display strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Inpatient Coding Certification (CCS or CIC).
  • Minimum of one year of recent facility coding experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, disease process, and anatomy and physiology.
  • Experience working in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Working knowledge of UB‑04 billing.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS , EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Position is relatively sedentary in a normal office environment with minimal physical risks. Use office equipment such as computer/laptop, monitor, keyboard, and general workstation setup.
