Job SummaryUnder the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this role assists in pharmacy department activities that do not require professional judgment. Responsibilities include triaging medication requests, processing orders, manufacturing, packaging, labeling drug products, aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures, managing institutional drug distribution, training new pharmacy employees, maintaining confidentiality, and performing other assigned tasks.
Responsibilities- Communicate medication issues and pending transactions to the pharmacy team.
- Perform sterile compounding management, including low and medium risk level competency and flux of products.
- Manage central pharmacy operations: answer telephone calls, manage unit dose area (Omnicell), operate pharmacy equipment, manage controlled substance system, fill kits and trays before shift end, uphold customer service standards.
- Handle patient care unit management: complete Omnicell pending and loads, verify and return credits, and maintain proper location.
- Demonstrate teamwork by completing orders, following policies, and respecting pharmacist oversight.
- Act responsibly with hazardous drugs and safety alerts (Code Red, Code Triage, Code Adam).
- Triage medication requests and prioritize for IV room responsibilities, compound, package, label drug products, perform aseptic technique, and document quality control.
- Perform institutional drug distribution tasks including batch runs, drug dispensing, record keeping, controlled substance handling, and medication delivery.
- Participate in training and orientation of new pharmacy personnel, interact effectively with healthcare team, maintain confidentiality, and ensure inventory levels.
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) required.
- Age at least 18 years with no current drug or alcohol addiction/convictions related to drug offenses.
- Some experience in a hospital pharmacy preferred.
- Registration with the state as a Pharmacy Technician (RPHT.NE) or Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPHT.IA) at start of employment required.
- Certified by board-approved state or national pharmacy technician certification program (CPHT) within 12 months of state registration required.
- Demonstrated abilities in basic chemistry, arithmetic, algebra, reading, and writing.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, and public.
- Computer skills:
Microsoft Outlook, Word, basic. - Analytical skills to interpret and evaluate medication requests for triaging.
- Time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet patient needs independently.
- Medium work: exert up to 50 pounds, or 100 pounds with assistance, moving items >60 requires two people.
