Overview
Posting for Police Officer – Full-Time, Omaha, NE. This posting is Open Competitive with a one-week reference to applicant volume. Work involves general police duties in enforcement of ordinances, statutes and laws in accordance with Police Department policies and procedures, including crime prevention, investigation and detection, protection of life and property, traffic control, and maintaining law and order in the community.
Responsibilities- Enforces federal, state, county, and city laws through de-escalation of chaotic situations, and the identification, apprehension, physical control, and/or arrest of potential suspects.
- Conducts investigations and various patrol activities and traffic investigations as assigned.
- Uses appropriate force when necessary, including the use of firearms and weapons.
- Serves as a first responder to disaster and emergency incidents.
- Communicates with other law enforcement and emergency personnel, dispatchers, citizens, witnesses, offenders, and victims.
- Safeguards and accounts for evidence and non-department property.
- Performs administrative duties, including writing reports and required documentation, serving warrants, issuing subpoenas, and staying informed about department orders and policies.
- Participates in court procedures and training as required.
- Maintains regular job attendance as scheduled and performs other related duties as assigned within the scope of an investigation.
Education and Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent. U.S. citizenship prior to completion of certification training. Twenty-one years of age prior to completion of the training program. Valid driver’s license. Background requirements include: history free of certain disqualifying criminal convictions, no recent DUI, no disqualifying military discharge, no prior disqualifying certification status, and other standards as listed. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English at the eleventh grade level.
Certified by licensed physician as able to meet the physical requirements.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include: computer proficiency; ability to learn evolving technology; adherence to Law Enforcement Code of Ethics; ability to complete the police academy; understanding of department policies and laws; knowledge of criminal and civil law; US Constitution; arrest and control tactics; firearm safety; equipment maintenance; community policing; fitness; CPR; communication skills; decision making, judgment, leadership, teamwork; public relations; planning and organization;
situational awareness; problem solving; and ability to perform job duties while wearing gear.
- Physical and sensory requirements include: hearing (no average hearing loss above specified thresholds), vision (uncorrected and corrected visual standards), color distinction, depth perception, peripheral vision; smell recognition; speaking clearly; fitness; ability to work in adverse conditions.
- Enforce laws and de-escalate chaotic situations; identify, apprehend, and arrest suspects.
- Conduct investigations and patrol/traffic duties.
- Use force as necessary and serve as first responder to emergencies.
- Communicate with stakeholders; safeguard and account for evidence.
- Prepare reports, serve warrants, stay informed about orders and policies.
- Participate in court and training; maintain attendance; perform related duties as required.
Candidates must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residence/authorization to work. The City may conduct criminal history, driving record, reference and background checks, and a background investigation. Some positions require pre-employment drug testing, hearing tests, and other screenings. Honesty and accuracy in application materials are required.
Benefits & PayPay Range: 2026: $79,580.80 with step increases to $ annually.
