Job SummaryA Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) trained to provide comprehensive mental health care across the lifespan. PMHNPs deliver outpatient psychiatric services, focusing on accessible, continuous, and patient‑centered care.
Essential Job Functions- Helps patients by evaluating medical and psychosocial conditions.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, including prescription of psychotropic medications.
- Monitors and evaluates treatment results.
- Evaluates patients by interviewing patient, family, and other persons, conducting physical examinations; observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents.
- Develops treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
- Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications; and supervising staff provision of services.
- Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
- Assures quality and safe service for patients and staff by enforcing policies, procedures, standards, rules, and legal regulations; participating in utilization reviews; and remaining available for emergency consultations.
- Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues.
- Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading profession organizations.
- Enhances department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social behavioral sciences and application of this knowledge to patient care.
- Knowledge of Practice‑Based Learning and Improvement that involves investigation and evaluation of their own patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence and improvements in patient care.
- Skill in using a computer and a variety of software, including Electronics Health Records (EHR) software, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
- Skill in communicating in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to convey professional demeanor when engaging with patients, protecting privacy, and confidentiality.
- Ability to enter data into a computer to maintain records.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to act as a good representative of the company.
Successful completion of a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing; licensed as an APRN in Nebraska; board certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; DEA license; and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort- This role operates in a healthcare setting. This position requires frequent sitting, standing, and computer work and allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort.
- Must be able to:
- Stand 30% or longer of an 8‑hour workday.
- Sit 45% of an 8‑hour workday.
- Walk 25% of an 8‑hour workday.
- Requires ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
- Requires employee to: bend, squat, kneel and reach above shoulder level occasionally and twist occasionally.
- Requires repetitive use of hands for: simple grasping, fine manipulation, computer use.
- Requires all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing) corrected to near normal range.
