The IV Team Registered Nurse provides specialized services throughout the hospital, responding to requests across all inpatient units. This role is responsible for the assessment, insertion, maintenance, and management of vascular access devices while promoting patient safety, quality outcomes, and evidence-based practice.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to vascular access requests from all hospital departments and inpatient units.
- Insert and maintain peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheters.
- Perform ultrasound-guided peripheral IV insertions if this is a known skill.
- Insert and manage midline catheters if this is a known skill.
- Insert and manage Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) if this is a known skill.
- Access and de-access implanted ports according to organizational policies and procedures.
- Perform and monitor dressing changes for midlines, PICCs, ports, and other vascular access devices.
- Assess vascular access sites for complications, including infection, infiltration, occlusion, and thrombosis, and intervene as appropriate.
- Provide education and support to patients, families, and healthcare staff regarding vascular access device care and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate documentation of procedures, assessments, and patient outcomes in the electronic medical record.

Essential Functions
- Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.
- Include data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.
- Prioritize data collection according to patient's immediate needs.
- Use assessment findings in discharge planning.
- Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
- Provide teaching specific to the patient's health care problem.
- Care plan reflects continuing care needs and/or referrals for discharge/transfer.
- Is familiar with, and follows, nursing protocols and standards of care for their unit.
- Use current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.
