Dish machine Operator (Full Time)

Position begins at $20.06/hr plus benefits. Begin August 2025 for the 2025-26 school year at Lewis & Clark Middle.

Position Purpose

Primary responsibilities include safe operation of the dish machine and assist with the preparation and serving of quality meals to students and staff. Responsibilities also include cleaning and sanitation of equipment, rotating food stock and supplies, manual dishwashing, and providing superior customer service.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must demonstrate excellent attendance and work record.
  • Previous food service or food preparation experience preferred.
  • Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations (American money, weight, volume, distance).
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and food safety practices.
  • Skill in customer relations and service recovery.
  • Practical working knowledge of food safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with students, co‑workers, teachers, administrators, and parents of diverse cultures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects with strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of OPS’s mission, purpose, goals, and expectations.
  • Willingness to travel to other schools when requested.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation, service, and storage of food.
  • Complete required reports in a timely manner.
  • Work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Serve as a positive role model.
  • Recognize reimbursable meals.
  • Support service excellence initiatives.
  • Follow cafeteria menu preparation and service protocols.
  • Cross‑cover other kitchen tasks as trained.
  • Promote customer service with appealing food.
  • Participate in the financial management process (portion control, pricing, storage).
  • Follow food safety cleaning and sanitation procedures, including HACCP.
  • Practice good personal hygiene.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English and basic math skills.
  • Operate food service equipment safely.
  • Follow oral and written instructions and respond to verbal information.
  • Complete Douglas County Food Handler’s Certification and Kitchen Assistant Training before attending.
  • Maintain current Food Handler’s Certification.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisor or central office administrators.

Equipment

May use computers and automated record‑keeping software; also may use commercial kitchen equipment such as ovens, steamers, hot holding cabinets, blenders, food processors, mixers, slicers, can openers, peelers, knives, scales, and thermometers.

Travel

Local travel within the district required.

Physical and Mental Demands
  • Respond rapidly in emergency situations.
  • Maintain organization, time‑management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work in office environments, school buildings, and warehouse settings.
  • Lifting, moving, and repositioning objects frequently up to 50 lbs.
Interrelations
  • Contact personnel within the district, customers, and vendors.
  • Work under direct supervision to complete day‑to‑day tasks.
  • Handle interactions with a diverse population with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain positive customer relationships and professional demeanor.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • Perform all assigned duties during scheduled hours unless approved leave is granted.
  • Any deviation from scheduled hours requires prior approval.
  • Report to work dressed in a manner reflecting a positive image of Omaha Public Schools.
Terms of Employment

This classified full‑time non‑exempt position is governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies. If represented by a collective bargaining representative, employment will also be governed by that agreement.

The Offer of Employment Is Contingent Upon
  • Obtaining and providing verification of all licenses, certificates, and other requirements.
  • Background check proving an acceptable history.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work.
  • Successful completion of pre‑employment drug test (if required).
  • Successful completion of tuberculosis skin test (if required).
  • Successful completion of pre‑employment medical examination for ability to safely perform essential functions.
